It wasn't an elf on a shelf, it was just a goofy looking elf. I can't find any pictures of it though. We had an elf like that, too, in the 1970s (though he still survives today!). We called him "Elfie" and would fight over who got to hang him from the bottom branches of the Christmas tree! He had a stiff plastic loop for hanging---I think from his hat (?)
