Just Kate
Ds spent the night with a friend last night and came home today talking about a computer game called Roblox. Anyone heard if this? Ds says it's similar to Minecraft, but free. Thoughts? Ds is 9 years old. Thanks!
Trish
Both my kids play it. They are 12 and 14, but have been playing for a couple of years.

I've just had a few moments to look at it, but I think you can chat with other players? Is that right? That doesn't sound great to me, but I may be missing something. TeachingTwins
My kids have played it, but we have run into kids creating games that are inappropriate. Yes, you can chat with other players. If anyone uses inappropriate words, kids under 13 can't see them.
mrsrevmeg
My kids have started playing fairly recently. My 10 year old likes it more than my 12 year old. There are a lot of games that are innocent. We have not seen any any inappropriate things yet.
BlueTaelon
Its a lot like Minecraft, my dd played it for a long time until she got into Minecraft. She says Roblox is for younger kids.

LostSurprise
If you child registers as under 13 they can only chat with pre-set phrases. They can't read other chat things either. Its also very easy to report people who are swearing or otherwise being inappropriate. Its a fun place for school groups to go on and see each other. They each have a place they can create as they wish. They can visit each other. There are games and groups you can join (or create your own groups). Some of the games are fairly innocent, but most are first person shooter type games. There are some costs if you get into it. You buy a card or a deluxe membership to get more on-site money, so you can buy mods for your characters and things like that. Deluxe membership allows you to create more. This is similar to Minecraft, although Minecraft allows greater customization and exploration. Minecraft is also free, but you get more with a deluxe monthly membership. mytwomonkeys
My son loves it. Roblox is very similar to minecraft. We first learned about it from our library, as it is on all of the computers in the kids room. Too bad all of our kids can't play together!!! lol. That would be so cool! Minecraft is NOT free, its $27, if your kid is playing for free you might want to explain piracy and the risks of it.
Trish
You can also set it up so your child only chats with friends that you approve of.
dbmamaz
My 10 yo has been playing for 3 years already. He only plays existing games, of which there are tons, and has not built anything on his own. Hubby gave permission for him to have full typing chat instead of the set phrases .We obviously are not big on censoring our kids, but we have all our computers in one room, so we are around

There is an app that's free. The 'Light' version. DS says its not worth anything, but it is free. My children do have 3 licenses under the $27 PC version. Just Kate
Thanks so much! I've never heard of it and when ds started telling me about the chatting capabilities, I got a bit nervous. He loves Minecraft (plays the paid version on his Kindle Fire) and he kept telling me this game is similar. I think I will check it out. :)
