HollyDay
Equine Science: Rick Parker's Equine Science 2007. That combined with riding and barrel racing classes have been a big hit! HollyDay, We have that text and my daughter is eager to add it to her schedule, but I have bee holding her off until I can find the supplemental instructor CD. I'm having no luck. Did you purchase the supplemental instructor helps that are talked about on "preface page xiii"?? Thank you, Traci Hi Traci!! Just found this question, sorry for the delay in responding. No, I did not find the CD.
Guest2
I cannot say enough how much my DS and Dd loved Great books Academy classes at first They have such a lively discussion in their individual classes, and then discuss with the family. Edited 2015 ...then I found out my son didn't actually read the material and the discussions rarely touched on the material. Websters online writing academy..kind of a hit. Both kids' writing have improved ,but the classes are pretty expensive, and they seem to be moving to recording the classes. I would wait on this one. Edited 2015: The biggest waste of time and money in my 12 years of homeschooling. Teacher had to use the restroom during the one hour class, never sent the correct handouts... forgot to teach the last class. Stay far away from this one!DS is in Derek Owen's calc and physics. The classes are ok..not great, and often we have to resubmit work because he didn't get the email. Questions take 2-3 days for an answer. I don't know that I will have Dd take these.Spectrum Chemistry combined with Apologia for Dd is a hit.American History using living book syllabus through MODG is a hit as well. Thanks for all of your sharing, I'm getting great ideas. My DS has one semester left, any great writing courses? Edited 2015; for my own future reference and anyone searching for courses
ereks mom
Our biggest hits so far: Both of my students are liking SOS Secondary Spanish and seem to be learning a lot. Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1 is going very well for my 9th grader. ABeka Basic Mathematics has been an excellent refresher for my non-college-bound 12th grader--who came to me as an 11th grader not knowing how to add/subtract fractions! For writing, we are using Writing Skills, Book 2. The girls don't love it, but they are certainly learning how to write good paragraphs and essays! Easy Grammar Ultimate is a great grammar review. We're using English from the Roots Up, and they like it pretty well when we play games with the cards. What's NOT working for us this year: Mystery of History (and also Illuminations Ancients) -- I'm finding that I just like it better when I put together my own program. What IS working for us for history is that we're doing a mash-up of several history/literature programs--mainly MFW CtG, TRISMS, and Veritas Press OT & Ancient Egypt (yes, I know it's supposed to be for 2nd grade ) with just a smidgen of Biblioplan, Winter Promise, and even a little bit of TOG, plus some online freebies. trulycrabby
We're in 4th grade: :) Singapore Math 4a and 4b; cannot say enough good things about them!!! Singapore Math Challenging Word Problems Grade 4 Livemocha Spanish; I like it because it has video dialogues with native speakers. It's a little light on practice and grammar, so I'm looking through this thread for a supplemental textbook. :) Bob Jones "I Met You in a Story" Reading and Workbook. It's so easy to use, and DS doesn't hate the exercises. My mother, who is a Master's degreed Reading Specialist and retired schoolteacher, loves it. :lurk5: Handwriting Without Tears Cursive Success. Crabbyson9 does one or two pages per day, no muss, no fuss.
Arch at Home
Life of Fred Beginning - It has taken dd 15 months to get through it but she just placed on the Compass exam into College Algebra without any Geometry so I am happy. Brave Writer Boomerang Book Club, KidsWrite Intermediate, and Expository Essays - I have seen great growth and increased confidence in dd in the last year as from this class. I like that it has taken this subjective subject out of my court. Homeschool Spanish Academy - We enrolled late in this class and have bounced around from teacher to teacher. The advantage to this is that dd has found an instructor that she really connects with and I already have her booked for next semester. I like the fact that dd walks away from her sessions and has to make a conscious effort to switch from Spanish to English. 2 hours of one on one Spanish with a native speaker is great! DD is also doing a "textile" elective where she is taking a homeschool sewing class at a local fabric store and an occassional knitting class at a local yarn shop. We hope to add a weaving component over the holidays. DD's sewing and knitting has really taken off and she constantly has a project going on whether "school" related or not. This is definitely dd's favorite part of the year.
Kareni
Life of Fred Beginning - It has taken dd 15 months to get through it but she just placed on the Compass exam into College Algebra without any Geometry so I am happy. I'm intrigued. College Algebra is typically Algebra 3; I'd have concerns that your daughter may flounder since she has not had Algebra 2 (Advanced Algebra in LOF terms). Also, if she does finish College Algebra and wishes to continue on with Trigonometry, she will certainly need to know Geometry. Regards, Kareni
