Jean in Newcastle
It is a good letter BUT I wonder if the fact that it is an open letter, instead of a private one sent by a role model to Miley, isn't because Sinead isn't trying to also distance herself from the fact that Miley has publicly said that she modeled her song and her look on Sinead herself. Tiramisu
I read the letter, looked at the video for reference, and had to get out of there quickly. It very much creeped me out, but made me understand Sinead O'Conner's vehemence. I can't see why it's any more than p*rn.

I agree. Good for her, lol. I see it as the opposite--a has-been looking for another 15 minutes of fame. I think she was pretty much forced to respond, with the way Miley so clearly tried to copy her look and style.

amsunshine
I see very little resemblance between the two videos and can understand why Sinead might be trying to distance herself from Miley's comments and video. I would assume the reason for making this an "open", rather than a private, letter, would be that she felt a public response was necessary given Miley's own public reference/comparison to Sinead's work. Tangerine
Is Sinead O'Connor really in a position to give advice? I mean the lady has been married 4 times, the last one very recent and lasting 16 days, not to mention really bizarre interviews she's given. I'm not sure the number of times one has been married disqualifies one from giving been there, done (or didn't do) that advice. Ditto on the bizarreness of interviews. If she was offering Miley marriage advice, the number of times she's been married might be relevant. She's giving advice on being a woman in the entertainment industry, a topic with which she is very familiar. Cat

I mean the lady has been married 4 times, the last one very recent and lasting 16 days, not to mention really bizarre interviews she's given. She's not giving marital advice. She's giving advice on how to survive a in a business that is exploitative of young talent (especially women). I think she is in a unique position to give that advice. nmoira
I see it as the opposite--a has-been looking for another 15 minutes of fame. Interesting, as it seems fame is the one thing she never really wanted. She still performs, but, unlike many "older" artists, she continues to produce new music and is still a creative force to be reckoned with. She seems content with the state of her career. Tangerine
I understand your perspectives. I do. I just imagine myself, in real life, being offered advice of any sort from a friend who recently married a man off the internet and divorced him in under a month and tattooed his initials on her face. A friend who has repeatedly publicly changed her declared sexual orientation. I just think it would be difficult to take advice from that person. I think the open letters to Miley are fame seeking. Why not just send her a private letter if you care deeply about her? Celebrities surely can get in contact through agents, right?

myfunnybunch
But I don't think the letter is just to Miley. :) I agree. I think it's an important message to many of the young women in our culture who are transitioning into adulthood and about how entertainment and media exploit young people, especially young women. lea_lpz
I watched wrecking ball. The video segrments with her being sexual detracts from the actual emotion and talent displayed in the song. But, I don't see her doing anything any different then a lot if young, female musicians out there. The only difference is she's a former child star with a wholesome image. I don't find her recent behavior offensive. I think she's just young and trying to find herself, grow up,deal with her parents troubled marriage and get through heartbreak like most young women her age, but in the public eye. She is absolutely talented and edgy. I don't think she is out of control. I hope she finds how to define herself in a way that's more natural for her. The sexual aspect she is attempting to exude I will say seems unnatural and forced. It could be her idea, and no one influencing her, but she just doesn't seem to be able to pull it off, at least not when she's trying too hard. In other parts of the video when she is not naked or licking the sledge hammer, she looks edgy, powerful and sexy. That is what she should try to work with. treestarfae
I thought this was common for child actors/performers to manifest adult problems? I think we just view Miley as an American daughter figure with her overexposure as a teen. Sinead (who's Irish) is stepping up and showing her motherly type love. I wish someone here that's a role model to her would step up.
nmoira
So much for the fiction that she respects Sinead O'Connor. Or anyone, really. It's unfortunate, because there are some valid criticisms of and counterpoints to O'Connor's letter to Cyrus that could have been made thoughtfully and respectfully. This has been almost entirely lost in the controversy; well, other than Amanda Palmer's attempt in which she equates herself with O'Connor and urges O'Connor to see their advantages relative to Cyrus. What the heck was that?

Pretty in Pink
Of course this is all speculation, but I really think that she and her parents know exactly what they are doing. They've all been in show business for years. I don't think she needed Sinead to point out to her that she is prostituting herself. She knows this and is obviously down with it.
