Susan in TN
Just a local state university. I'm trying very hard to hide the anxiety I feel over the whole process. If ds would make up his mind about whether or not he wants to study music it would make everything so much simpler. But for now he's going with Undecided. And that would be fine if he was considering pretty much anything BUT music. I'll likely be in the luny bin by spring.
Sunshine State Sue
Congratulations. We've submitted 3. One we got no acknowledgement. One we got a message saying they were working on figuring out how to get it out of the common app. One ds hit the submit button without bothering to check it over or ask anyone to check it over. Do you think they they will wait for his 9/2014 ACT scores? I'm already in the looney bin. ETA: Also, the common app counselor section shows the 2 common apps ds submitted as 'not submitted'. Thanks for the heads up, Brenda. I contacted CA 9/23. They responded and I sent screen shots 9/24. I've heard nothing since then.

I woke up in the middle of the night to worry about the fact that I don't think ds checked the "homeschooled?" box. For "name of school / school code" we listed his umbrella school as they instructed. And then I realized that we haven't gotten our transcript review back from the umbrella, so I don't know how long it will take to actually get a transcript to them. So we're not actually done with it. It is good to have company in the bin. Sort of cozy and friendly-like.
Gwen in VA
We haven't submitted anything yet, but every time dd goes to the Common App to work on something, another WEIRD question pops up on our radar. She apparently used one email for a teacher in one location and another email for the same teacher in a different location, so now said teacher cannot access the Common App! (Thankfully the school this is an issue for said that dd's rec people can just submit paper copies.) Dd can't be the only person in the world to type in two different but correct emails for one person whom she knows well! If she had a different application for each school and she goofed one, she still might get into the other schools. Since she has ONE application for all schools, what happens if she goofs some aspect of it? This is the question that occasionally haunts me at 3 a.m.! I'll join you all in the looney bin! Martha in GA
I woke up in the middle of the night to worry about the fact that I don't think ds checked the "homeschooled?" box. For "name of school / school code" we listed his umbrella school as they instructed. How does this work? We use an umbrella school, so I just assumed that it would be like a regular school code, etc. I'm afraid if I say my dd is homeschooled, they will want SAT II's, which I didn't have my dd take . . .I feel like I'm stuck between two worlds for reporting purposes. Martha I think it depends on your state law. In TN, we are technically/legally considered a satellite branch of a private school (the umbrella school). I think this is why the umbrella told us NOT to write "homeschooled" but to use their school ID code. I believe that if we were not with an umbrella school and simply reported to our local school district, THAT would be considered true home schooling. My son didn't want anyone to look over his application for a very selective school, although he did consent to print out a PDF of his final version. I was glancing over it & said, "You spelled 'engineering' wrong!" Son: "Mom, I just hit 'submit.' " Aaarrrggh! :willy_nilly: Yes, he carelessly spelled it "engineerring" -- this from a kid with 800s on the verbal parts of the SAT. He said he had turned off spell-check in Pages/TextEdit/whatever because it messed up his German homework. :glare: Oh well ... when he doesn't get in, we can blame it on Engineerring ... :D It is good to have company in the bin. Many schools do not require SAT IIs for homeschoolers. You can check at each college's website. I wrote in another thread that I printed up (and originally uploaded onto the CA) the incorrect version of ds's course descriptions. I had named them similarly, just different enough to save, and then I used the wrong one!!! I didn't notice until I did my final skim yesterday before hitting final submit. Too late for the ones we MAILED!! And, wowsers, there are a couple of doozies in there (including an incorrect course title!!!) I am consoling myself by hoping that they really do NOT read them that closely!!! :(
nancy in nj
Since she has ONE application for all schools, what happens if she goofs some aspect of it? This is the question that occasionally haunts me at 3 a.m.! I'll join you all in the looney bin! DO NOT DESPAIR! You cannot change the common application once it is submitted to a school (for that school); however, at some point, they activate a feature that allows you to make changes to the common app. for schools to be submitted in the future. It also imports all your information from the original application (with the exceptions of attachments which have to be reattached), so you don't have to start from scratch. You will then have created common app version 2 and need to select that for all future submissions. I recall reading with the "improvements" to the common app. you will no longer be restricted to just 10 versions this year. Ask me how I know? My dd had one early application (Oct 15) to Chapel Hill last year, and of course, as soon as she hit submit, we noticed 2 errors in her common application essay. She missed the "The" in "The Tale of Two Cities" and made a last minute change from I've to I have and somehow it turned out "I've have." Luckily, we didn't stress too much since it was "only" her financial and academic safety. Ironically, that imperfect essay got her an invitation (300 or of 15,000 early app's) to compete for merit aid and an invitation to the honors program, and she is now loving life as a Tar Heel. I don't think most schools will penalize an otherwise stellar app. for a couple very minor errors.
nancy in nj
I forgot to mention that this redo feature is only available for the normal common app. student stuff and not for the stuff you fill out in your role as school counselor or recommendations. Last year, I proofed a counselor letter written by a friend who was applying ED to an Ivy and the letter had been targeted specifically to that Ivy. Do not do this! I think there is a way to create a different letter but I believe it involves your student creating a whole separate application from scratch with a different student account, but I can't imagine anyone voluntarily choosing to repeat the process! AK_Mom4
So far, DS17 has finished three applications and has one acceptance (2nd choice school). It's been rough going. The third was a freebie - they offered him a free application and no essay. Yippee!
