I'd prefer that the videos have actors re-enacting the events so that they're like a movie, rather than documentaries with experts giving their opinions.  A little of that is okay, but it tends to get dry and my students lose interest.  :(  They MUCH prefer the ones with real actors portraying historical characters, and they love CGI animation that makes the setting come to life.  I'd like to find some videos that run about 45 minutes to an hour.

Right now, we're studying Old Kingdom Egypt, and we'll be watching Pyramid tomorrow.  Later, when we study New Kingdom Egypt, we'll watch The Egyptian Book of the Dead over a couple of days (since it's 1:30 long).

I'm on the lookout for similar good, INTERESTING videos on the following topics:

  • Minoan Crete
  • Biblical Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob)
  • Babylonians/Amorites
  • Hittites
  • Phoenicians/Canaanites
  • Assyria
  • Pharaoh Amenhotep IV/Akhenaten & Nefertiti
  • Joseph & Moses & the Exodus
  • Hatshepsut
  • Pharaoh Tutankhamun
  • Israel & Judah (including Solomon, David, prophets)
  • Persia
  • China (Shang & Zhou dynasties)

Thanks in advance!

Joseph was made into a movie back in 1995 with Ben Kingsley. Not sure how old your dc are, you may want to preview it before you have them watch it. We enjoyed it (as college students): http://www.amazon.com/Joseph-The-Bible-Collection-Kingsley/dp/B0007VY404/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380148637&sr=8-1&keywords=joseph+paul+mercurio

The Prince of Egypt is pretty accurate as far as Moses and the Exodus. It's interesting, the music is nice, and it's animated.

As far as Persia, I loved the story of Ester represented in One Night With The King

I don't know if you will go with complete fiction based on a real story, but dh and I are The Mummy fans and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is pretty sweet

Thanks for asking this question, as I am planning on studying the Ancients next year in sixth grade, and I can't wait to share these and The Pyramid and other videos with ds10, by then ds11. We already watched The Prince of Egypt when he was 9.

Thank you!  Actually, my students are high schoolers, but they read on a middle school level and are not AT ALL academically minded, so when looking for books or videos for them, I usually ask on the K-8 board because what WTM high schoolers use would be WAY over their heads!  Thanks again!

Not sure if they still do, but Amazon Prime used to have the Veggie Tales "Moe and the Big Exit" (Moses/Exodus) and "Little Joe" (Joseph) streaming.  Might be a good exercise (fun too) to watch the Veggie Tales version and then write how they mirror the actual Biblical stories.

Remember the Paul Mecurio Joseph movie. Sigh.  He was very cute.

As for King Tut, check PBS.org:

Also...see this http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/mummy/

They also did a bunch on building a chariot, building the pyramids, etc.

When you get to Rome these are great. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xk3pc1_ancient-rome-the-rise-and-fall-of-an-empire-ep-1-caesar_shortfilms (this is the link to #1)

Completely acted out, no "experts".  I do think there is a Narrator, DS 12 loved them!  There are 6 in total.  #4 is actually the earliest in time but I'd still watch them in order.  You can look these up directly on youtube but there are playback issues with some of them.... I had no problems going through daily motion.

Here is another place to look for video's (most of these are the boring kind.... you just have to pre-view to find the good ones.)

Thanks for the links above, ladies! I do enjoy the Music Lovers videos, but ds wasn't as enthused when he was nine. Will try them again.

For Israel and Judah, there is The Nativity Story and The Bible miniseries that just got put out recently. I haven't seen the series yet, but I really want to.

There was a shorter documentary about The Seven Wonders of the World, which had reenactments and very few talking heads. I don't remember the exact title, it may have been just the topic.
