4ofus
I've always thought sweet ~ but tonight I tried a new recipe that's more like cake! Too sweet! I didn't think it was possible, but it is! What say you??
Jean in Newcastle
I'm not sure if you're asking if I think it tastes sweet or if I think it should be made sweet?
Ravin
Overall, I lean towards skip the sweet. You can always drizzle on honey if you want a sweet piece later.
Mrs Mungo
It depends upon why I am making it. I like it sweet (but not like cake) with chili. I make non-sweet for everything else.
Annie G
Not sweet!!
Lara in Colo
I like it sweet if plain (with corn in it) and non sweet with jalapenos in it
VaKim
Mine is almost like pound cake. Hate cornbread that isn't sweet. Is it a regional thing?
Melissa in Australia
there was no other. I have never had cornbread. I have no idea what it is meant to be like.
Chris in VA
We are Jiffy Mix folks here, for the most part. It's fairly sweet. I do get corn from George Washington's mill from time to time--(Isn't that cool? lol)-- and the recipe that comes with the bag is not AS sweet, but not savory. Lisa in SC
A little sweet, but not as sweet as cake. We only have cornbread if it's accompanying something spicy, so I think a little bit sweet balances the heat. Edited for typo.
Mommyof4ks
I grew up with no-sweet cornbread, but about a decade ago I ate some sweet cornbread at a friend's house, and now I prefer that. :) It just has a quarter cup of sugar in it, not too sweet. Orthodox6
Slightly sweet preferred. NEVER with "stuff" in it (corn pieces, cheese, or peppers). Made from scratch, always.
Amy in NH
Medium? The question should have been "with bits of corn or without". Definitely without. Blech. :ack2:
Cinder
I answered sweet on the poll but I prefer it slightly sweet. My recipe uses 1/4 cup sugar. I remember once having cornbread at dh's parents house. It was dry and definitely not sweet. Fil loaded his piece up with butter and honey. Loaded it. I guess that was the best way to eat it. Yeah, it was that bad. :tongue_smilie:
fairfarmhand
Sweet but only a little bit. Like 3 tbsp sugar to a whole recipe.
Parrothead
It depends on the occasion. If I'm making it for dh's cornbread dressing during the holidays then it is not sweet. If I'm making it as a side for a meal then mildly sweet. I've never liked it very sweet. Even when making cornbread with blueberries. Chelli
Not sweet. "True Southern cornbread does not have sugar." said by Emeril on Top Chef.
Jayne J
Sweet but only a little bit. Like 3 tbsp sugar to a whole recipe. Yup. Then lots of butter, and honey drizzled over it all. So, the cornbread is a little sweet, and I add more with the honey. :tongue_smilie:
VaKim
No clue, but I have to say I've never eaten one as sweet as pound cake. Do you have a recipe? I'd like to try that. Sure. 1 cup flour 1 cup cornmeal 1 cup sugar 1 Tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups milk 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted Preheat oven to 375. Whisk together dry ingredients. Fold wet ingredients into dry. Stir until just blended. Pour into 9x9 pan or dish. Bake 30-35 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. I usually halve this for my family and use an 8x8 pan, greased.

Compare this with some cake recipes in cookbooks and you'll see the similarities. (although this contains more baking powder than so small a cake usually would include) At any rate, I would not think of this, nor serve this, as a "side of cornbread" with a meal. nmoira
Sweet for breakfast cornbread (usually blueberry cornbread). Not sweet for everything else.
LaCEmom
As sweet as corn? I don't think I've ever had cornbread sugary sweet like some of you are talking about, but I do consider it slightly sweet, the same way whole kernel corn is sweet IMO. Yep, and that is how we like it. Always with pinto beans.
Orthodox6
Yep, and that is how we like it. Always with pinto beans. I was thinking of copying your recipe to use as a dessert with a sidebowl of blueberries! :001_smile:

dangermom
Not sweet! There has to be a little sugar in there, about 1/4 cup, but I can't stand the kind of cornbread that is more like cake than bread. You can put honey on it if sweet is wanted, and that's better anyway. I also fill mine up with corn. It's the favorite method here. Now I want to bake cornbread for dinner....but it's going to be like 95 today...
Belacqua
Sweet? Good. Not so sweet? Good. Bits of stuff, no bits...all good. Bring it on. As long as it isn't dry. I still hear about the time I tried a new cornbread recipe and produced something comparable to drywall. Not good.
Jann in TX
JIffy mix with 1-2 heaping spoonfuls of sugar added. We only have cornbread with spicy beans or chili-- sweeter cornbread is great with spicy foods! "Regular' corn bread tends to make theses dishes more bland. coffeegal
Sweet and baked in a buttered iron skillet. I'm picky about my cornbread; I only eat my mom's and mine. :hat:
Jackie
I like the cornbread itself not sweet. But I always like to drizzle honey on it.
Tabrett
Not! Sweet cornbread would taste horrible in my buttermilk! Hot, crumbled cornbread in an icy cold glass of buttermilk..mmmm.mmmm!
4ofus
Now I think we need a cornbread recipe swap. :).
Tiffnkids
Either way is fine with me! I usually do a cast iron skillet cornbread that is slightly sweet.
