Soccer moms, I have a cleat question.

Recommended Posts

Our 4yo son is going to be playing soccer, Dh & FIL just took ds4 to Walmart to get cleats. He is currently wearing a size 12 shoe and they got him 13 size rubber cleats.

I can put my whole thumb in-between the end of his big toe and the end of the shoe, normally I would just get a pair of shoes in this case but we're new to buying cleats, is this too much room?

Also, does he need metal cleats or is the rubber fine? (Is this a general thing or is it dependent on what the coach wants?)

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

Rubber Cleats are fine. You really want to have him stand up and push his foot as far back in the cleat he can, then you should be able to have your WHOLE thumbnail worths of room a little bit more is fine too. Once he gets into the leather ($40 ish or more) cleats you will want only 1 thumbnail worth of room because they have a lot of "give" the more they are used :)

Once you have a child that starts playing 3-4 times a week you will likely want to get two sets , so they completely dry out (especially in the spring) in between games & practices.

Last thing, make sure they are soccer cleats. I noticed they have been putting football and baseball cleats with the soccer cleats. Soccer cleats do not have a "toe" cleat . That's' one at the very top, those are not allowed on the soccer field because of the chances of getting kicked with them. Don't forget shin guards and a #3 ball :)

My 10 yod dd tried out for the Division 1 travel team and made it 2 years in a row. It's the only sport I know anything about ( I played in college) so it's nice to see her in mommy's footsteps. Good luck with soccer season, it's so much fun!!!!

I think for his age he will be fine. Also, some soccer socks are really thick...so you may not have as much room as you think.

If they seem to fit snugly with his shin guards and socks on, then he should be fine. To my knowledge, in all the years we've played, metal cleats are not allowed in soccer play. Soccer cleats and football cleats are different. Football shoes have a cleat at the toe, I believe, that soccer shoes do not have. As the kids get older, referees will check their shoes to make sure they are wearing proper shoes for play and they won't be allowed to play if they have football or other improper shoes on. I guess some baseball shoes also have cleats, but you need to make certain that he's wearing standard soccer cleats.

I say try the size 12. He won't be able to wear them in the spring anyways (since he'll have grown!) and if the cleats are too big then he just won't be able to play, but will fall over his legs (tried it and had to buy another pair!!).

I bought twin dd's cleats last fall, thinking their team was also playing in the spring. They were 6 and it was their first time playing. Turned out they wer eonly playing in the fall anyways and the cleats are way too small now anyways!
