Jean in Newcastle
Libby the disabled wonder dog is terrified of thunder. It is thundering right now. We put a small t-shirt on her and made it tight for a homemade thundershirt. She's still panting and quaking. Last thunder storm we had she got so terrified that she was running in a panic into walls and doors. Any suggestions?
Flowing Brook
We had a dog like this. We would hold him and talk to him. It helped to have some soothing music in the background. After a while he would calm down some. It helped also if he was in a smaller area with few distractions and everyone stayed calm. We would talk to him in a sing song voice. PrincessMommy
I have no words of advice, but I'm thinking your post title sounds like the title of a children's picture book.
dsmith
Our dog recently decided he is afraid of thunder. Nothing helps him at all! A previous dog would only calm down if we played Yanni loudly, lol. I think we were flipping through TV stations when there was a Yanni concert on PBS, and the dog instantly settled down. We went out and bought a CD asap. The next storm we put the CD in, turned it up, and had a calm happy dog. It wouldn't work with any other music, unfortunately. zoobie
Bach's Rescue Remedy worked for our old girl. It's a people formula of flower essences, found in Whole Foods or vitamin stores or online. She took a whole dropper of it but was 75lbs. She still hated storms but didn't try to sit on our heads and stopped panting frantically. Our kennel turns on all the lights and plays loud classical music if there's a storm. I don't know if I could take Yanni! :)
Jean in Newcastle
Oh - I have some Rescue Remedy! I'll have to try it. And I suppose I could find Yanni on YouTube!
dirty ethel rackham
We love Rescue Remedy here. It really helped our Bear stay calm this last Independence Day through all the fireworks. I put a few drops on a treat and he slept through the fireworks. (It wasn't like he was drugged, more like nothing was going on as far as he was concerned so it was like any ordinary evening.) Pawz4me
I'd try melatonin, along with a Thunder Shirt or Anxiety Wrap. Melatonin has been studied at Tufts vet school and found to be effective for about 80 percent of dogs with noise phobias. Here is some information. plansrme
What worked for us was our dog's getting too deaf to hear the thunder. Once he turned 12 or 13, he was fine. Possibly that is not the answer you were looking for, but until then, one of us had to sleep downstairs with him during a thunderstorm. We used some kind of EZ-something or another, probably similar to Rescue Remedy, that worked well for general age-related anxiety but was not nearly strong enough for thunderstorms. I wish we had known about thundershirts, though I don't know that that would have been enough. I hope you find something that works for Libby.
