working up a unit summary / fact sheet for a 2nd grader on "founding" of the North American land Mass (going to do Native American next).

What facts would you include -- i am thinking Viking in  1000 AD (Leif the Luck) up to 1590 (the Lost Coloney of Roanoke) next unit to start with Jamestown (

We have read several books; but i am trying to come up with "What i want him to remember".

Nothing too intense; but i feel we need a summary before we move on to Jamestown and the early settlements

i am using a ful curr for math, science and phonics and so on -- :)-- i am trying to just read a lot of history to them, they are young, but i want to be sure we are "pulling out something to remember" too.

Thoughts:  1000 AD to 1590 -- Vikings to the Lost Colony of Roanoke -- what would YOU pull out to be most improtant to "take away from this"

I would take a look at SOTW.

For that time period and that age?  I wouldn't.  SOTW covers a LOT, so the OP would have the same problem she's having now, which is trying to narrow it down.

I recommend instead something that's already prepared for that age group and which is pared down to some of the key highlights that are most important at this point.... either HOD's "Beyond" program or MFW Adventures, for example.  Not suggesting you necessarily buy their program if you're wanting to do this on your own, but maybe pull up the sample lessons and take a look at their Table of Contents to see the topics they highlight for the history part of it.

Honestly? Biggest take away would be

"History is fun to study and I find it interesting!"

I didn't really care if dd retained much of anything, b/c my intent was exposure and sparking a flame of interest. So I say, do whatever you want and have a great time with it.

YMMV.

:iagree:    Five in a Row is wonderful for this age. Somewhere there's a chart of FIAR books by location/geography, topics covered, time period, and I forget what else, so you "row" the books in any order you want.  Each book study can stand alone, so you can do them in random order, or you can choose an order from the chart and do them that way.
