sandalwood
Can anyone recomend a high school literature program that uses whole books? Something that held my hand as the teacher would be ideal... does that exist? Tell me how to discuss, plot, etc.
mschickie
You might want to check out Novel Units (secular) or Progeny Press (Christian) literature guides. You can choose the books you want and then they really walk you through going over them with your students. I used several of them for sd when she was in high school and now we have a mom who uses them in our co-op to teach a lit class. You can find almost all the greats including Shakespeare. I highly recommend them.

I didn't even think of these. Thank you!
MerryAtHope
Another option would be to check out the free Glencoe Lit. guides, or to use SparkNotes to help you with the analysis and deciding things to point out. These are both free online. What about Lightning Lit?
JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
How about Excellence in Literature? They have a website and are available through IEW. There is also Windows to the World and the Introduction to Literary Analysis Syllabus that incorporates it with Teaching the Classics. Or put all of the above together. Mom22ns
Excellence in Lit is my favorite whole books literature program, but it doesn't hand hold the teacher. Lightning Lit has a TM and more handholding.
Brenda in MA
I would recommend Hewitt's Lightning Lit. Most of their high school units use 4 novels, plus they include poetry & short stories in the course manual. The manuals include comprehension questions and suggested writing assignments. My son really liked these. The manuals also provide background material on each author/work. I tried a couple of the Novel Units, and we were not impressed. These seemed short on actual content and very long on busy work -- lots of worksheets for vocabulary, etc. They seemed much more suited to classroom use. mschickie
With the Novel Units you have to pick and choose on the activities. We never did the vocabulary but I quite often did the graphic organizers and used them as basis for essays. The tests in the Novel Units were handy. beckster
We are using Excellence in Literature this year. It is our first year with it, so I do not have an BTDT advise, but it looks good!
Maura in NY
Another vote for Excellence in Literature here.
Candid
In the bigger and more expensive categories many of the whole books packages do this: Sonlight, MFW and Tapestry all cover whole books with varying degrees of hand holding.
Robin in DFW
Listen to SWB's Literary Analysis mp3 lecture. It explains how to do it without getting expensive guides. Also, there have been several threads recently regarding this very thing. Check out SparkNotes 101 Literature book...it contains 150 novel summaries. KRG
This will be our 2nd year to use Excellence in Literature. I use it as a guideline and it does offer a nice selection of books. The instructions seem a little awkward at first but once you get used to the layout it's not a problem.
