Live2Ride
We are staying in DC. I need a hotel near the major sites/museums that is in a safe area and not going to cost an arm and a leg :) been a while since we've been there :) thanks! We will have our car :)
Amira
How are you going to be getting around? Will you have a car? Do you need to be near a metro stop?
Dahliarw
You'll have to check rates (they were cheaper on the weekend when we went), but a couple of years ago we stayed at the Radisson Hotel Reagan National Airport. It was something like 2 blocks to the nearest metro, and a 10 minute ride to the mall, if I remember right. It was short - and way easier than driving. http://www.radisson.com/arlington-hotel-va-22202/vaarling There was a fridge and microwave in the room, so we brought breakfast and such. Live2Ride
Thanks! traveling by car. We used to live in Manassas and Warrenton, but moved away 13 years ago...haven't been able to return due to family vacations elsewhere needing our attention. Live2Ride
Anyone have any other suggestions? :)
Amira
We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Ballston when we visited last year before moving here. It's right off the Ballston exit on 66 and they have free parking which isn't necessarily expected in DC. It's about a 10 minute walk to the Ballston Metro so we were able to leave the car at the hotel and not deal with it in Washington which was really nice. Or you can just drive in on 66. It's nothing amazing, so if you want a nice hotel, you might want to look elsewhere, but it worked nicely for our family of 5. And if you're here on a Sunday, we have a nice ward you can visit. :)
Live2Ride
I want to try and find a hotel with a kitchenette. We would like to minimize eating out too much :)
zoobie
We stayed at either the Embassy Suites or Residence Inn in Old Towne Alexandria a couple of years ago. For some reason, neither DH nor I can remember which. It had a kitchenette and was nearish a Trader Joe's (drive) and Whole Foods (walk?). The Metro was walking distance too. Beth S
Just a general recommendation. We stayed at the last stop (Greenbelt) of the Green Line on the Metro. Would be safe to park there; we were able to walk from our lodging. This same stop had a bus line that took people to Baltimore! (So we flew in/out of Baltimore & saved a LOT of $$.) Maybe find a motel chain you like, and see if their website explains that they are near a Metro stop. I'm assuming prices are cheaper on the outskirts of the city. We did lots of walking, and took the Metro, and felt like we were more "immersed" in the city than if we had used a car. Have a great trip! *lifeoftheparty*
There is a Towne Place Suites in Bowie, MD, that has kitchens with stoves, fully stocked, etc. it is a 10 minute drive from the New Carrolton metro station. (It's also a very quick/easy 20-30 minute drive into DC, depending on traffic and how fast you drive) The hotel is right behind the Bowie Town Center, it's safe, and there is a large Safeway and many other shops/eateries right there. It would be a lot cheaper than places in northern VA and the traffic is WAY better.
*lifeoftheparty*
A hotel with a kitchen IN DC, in a safe area, close to everything, will probably cost an arm and leg. Unless you are coming in Jan/Feb when tourist season is over. Sorry.
jen3kids
Someone posted about a bed and breakfast last spring. It was inexpensive and the owners would drive you to the metro station.
Mrs Mungo
We usually stay near Arlington within walking distance to the Rosslyn Metro stop. There are several restaurants (Starbucks, Chipotle, stuff like that) near there and it included breakfast. Parking was also included (this is something you want to check on, not all hotels offer parking). I don't remember exactly which hotel was, but it was a Marriott hotel because we used points last time. It had a small kitchen.
6packofun
We stayed here several years ago and it was very convenient! We parked in their underground garage and were able to walk everywhere, even with our young kiddos. (We did do some tour bus shuttle things, too, but we could walk to the White House and pick up the shuttles near there.) It's a pretty basic hotel...pool on the roof, nothing fancy, and kids ate free at the restaurant buffet. The room was on the small side, but we were rarely in there and it was clean and staff was great. http://www.ihg.com/holidayinn/hotels/us/en/washington/wassm/hoteldetail
Live2Ride
Thanks y'all for the recommendations! I will be looking at them in the next few days and decide on one. I'd rather hop on the metro and walk everywhere...saves time really.

IanSebast
Did you go? We're planning a trip to the DC area in Jan/Feb, and I'm very interested in your experience and what work and/or didn't! We're a family of 6, with three children under 5, including a 5 month old baby! Thanks!!!
Beth78
We stayed at One Washington Circle hotel. (across from the GWU hospital) It had a kitchen in it and a week cost us around $750 last August.
Live2Ride
We are leaving thursday :). We got on homeaway and VBRO and found a great little place there in DC, 2 blocks from the metro, grocery stores around, free parking pass, 4 adult bikes to use, 1 metro stop from smithsonian and 2 stops from the capitol and under 190 a night. Much cheaper than any hotel i found with the requirements we wanted (close to dc and metro, full kitchen, free/cheap parking). It had great reviews and was open and bright. We are stopping in Gatlinburg for 4 nights and then off to DC :) . Cant wait!
