A little emotional cleaning off book shelves...

Recommended Posts

I'm cleaning off our book shelves to make room for next year and our next phase in homeschooling, and I'm kind of sad. I've not gotten rid of anything since we started and as I took old math books and grammar books off the shelf, I looked long and lovingly at them before I put them into For Sale pile. Yesterday and today, the dc and I went through all thier old fiction books and books we bought for study extra reading, and there are so many we read together when they were little or series that were so near and dear to thier hearts, that I almost teared up putting them into to-go piles! I remember being all curled up and reading Little Women and Oliver Twist, all the different things ds would come and tell me about things he learned from the Magic Tree House books ( and his absolute obsession with the Titanic for months after he read that book).

Sigh. My babies aren't babies anymore.

We are moving into the whole next phase of thier lives and school, and while I am thoroughly looking forward to it, it makes me a little sad to look behind and see that whole chapter come to close. Its just this new phase seems so different from the one we are moving forth from. Entering 5th grade is a lot different than entering 1st when we first started. A lot different.

Its all good, though. Just wanted to vent my mushiness because when I was oohing and ahhing over the books earlier today, both dc looked at me like I was nuts.:glare: And continued to happily put more books on the for-sale pile. (I secretly pulled some out and shoved them under my bed, though)

Thanks for listening,

I feel that way, too. It's been especially hard for me to give away the things that I didn't end up using with the younger kids, since they ended up going back to ps. There are ways in which my homeschooling dream didn't turn out as expected. But there are ways in which my kids' journeys are so special, too, so it's bittersweet.

I still have one pre-k, so I'm not quite there yet. I am one who doesn't really relish teaching early reading and phonics, but just the idea of not having another to do it for will be said. As for my children's books (not curriculum), I'm keeping them for the grandkids.:D

I glad to know that I am not the only mom to feel this way...I wish I could just push a "pause" button on life. Actually, even a rewind button would be good, too! I know some moms who would prefer the fast-forward but I would remove that one from my time machine!!!

I hate that my little boys(age 13 on Aug. 25th and 11 on Feb. 18th)are growing up. I am soooo enjoying this ride!!

I am a total purger. I get rid all the kids papers (except our history notebooks) but I have the hardest time getting rid of our special books. They are the one thing I saved from my childhood and I am just packing the special ones up to give them when they have their own kids. I just can't throw away our old friends! :001_smile:
