Guest Parker
Is there a minimum number of high school credits per year when you're homeschooled? I'm aware of the area we need to be at the end of high school, but is there a certain number you need to reach each year?

Jean in Newcastle
No, but it helps to divide by four and roughly get that much each year.
Guest Parker
thanks. Another question- if you got a high amount of credits for 3 years of high school but had 4-5 for one, do you think colleges would mind or would they not care when you got them
ThisIsTheDay
It may depend on the year, or what was going on to cause the student to have significantly fewer credits. Was there a move in your family? An illness or other huge distraction? Are you talking about a year with four credits? (Not a big deal, imo.) Two credits? (Possibly more of a concern.) Was the year with fewer credits early in high school or more recent? You might consider grouping your subjects on your transcript, i.e., all of the English credits together, all history credits together, etc. Look at the schools to which your student plans to apply. I just noticed that Virginia Tech requires only 18 credits for freshman applicants. That would make the average only 4.5 credits per year. I also think that most colleges will look at more than just this one thing. Test scores, grades, coursework, letters of recommendation, uniqueness of the student, essays are all a part of the bigger picture and can provide balance to any possible negatives. Candid
Is there a minimum number of high school credits per year when you're homeschooled? I'm aware of the area we need to be at the end of high school, but is there a certain number you need to reach each year? This might depend of your state law. I've never heard chatter about this issue, but if home schoolers have detailed requirements under your state law I suppose this might be there. thanks. Another question- if you got a high amount of credits for 3 years of high school but had 4-5 for one, do you think colleges would mind or would they not care when you got them A lot of schools want to see a trajectory of work. And they want to see a student who is increasingly challenging themselves. I don't know what exactly they do with transcripts that don't show the years a student took various subjects, do they try to back figure out what a student took when? I don't know. You would certainly want to avoid the impression that your student has worked really hard their first three years, but is taking their senior year "off." That would be a negative for colleges. Mom22ns
There is no set number of credits per year here. There is no graduation credit requirement for homeschoolers either. Ps students need 24 credits to graduate. I typically consider 6 as a minimum and 8 as a maximum, but that is just my personal opinion, nothing official. As far as having a light year, I agree it depends on the reason. If the student has a very heavy schedule, several APs for example, they might have a lighter total number of credits. If there were health issues or other extenuating circumstances, I would just make sure you include that in a cover letter. It might be that during one of the later years, the student worked or volunteered a lot. I think that would be very acceptable if it related to experience in their field of interest. There could be many scenarios that a college wouldn't be put off by. However, "I just didn't want to do much school" could be bad :). Riley
It wouldn't be senior year, it was freshman. Dd had some bad mental illness issues and she got 4 credits and we were wondering if we would need to do some more work before starting the next year. Thanks everyone
ThisIsTheDay
My dd had 4.8 credits for freshman year. The .5 was for health, the .3 for Latin that she never carried further. I didn't address it at all, and it was a complete non-issue for the colleges to which she applied. The school she's going to has a 53% acceptance rate, just to show that it was a more selective school. (And she got into their honors program, which is limited to 10% of incoming freshman.) I hope this helps!
