Vida Winter
How are they holding up? I'm thinking of making a large one (4'x8') for a hallway.
Alte Veste Academy
We used the cheapie 4x8 showerboard from Lowe's, and DH trimmed it out so that it looks framed. We have had it for about a year, I think, and it still looks brand new. I read somewhere that If you wax the board before use, you won't have issues with ghost writing. So we turtle waxed it and, sure enough, it got nice and slick/shiny and has always erased beautifully. Highly recommend it!

I did not wax ours. We only have an issue when my little ones use red on the board, but magic eraser takes it off completely. We love ours. MomOfOneFunOne
AMDG We also used the shower board. I think we put it up when my student was in K or 1st. She'sentering 9th now. I never heard the trick about wax but even w/o the the wax we dont have much to complain about. Now, when we erase, we can sometimes see the remnants of what was written and I would say that started a couple of years ago. It lasted a long time for such an inexpensive option. Also, if you do decide to go this route, you might consider using the whole board. It make a nice large board and that does come in handy. It is nice to be able ro put something on the board and be able to leave it and still have plenty of room to wk. And may I suggest both dry and wwt erase markers in lots amd lots of colors? We had a lot of fun and a lot of good learning with those markers and board. Wistful sigh . . .
mothergooseof4
Mine has been in use for about eight years. Other than a scratch, it is good. I clean it with alcohol, and occasionally give it a rub down with WD40.
ondreeuh
We bought showerboard from Home Depot last summer, and it's always had trouble with ghosting. I use Expo dry erase - low odor (standard dry erase markers, right?) so I don't think they are the problem. I can get it completely clean with a baby wipe or Clorox wipe. I will try waxing it. Wait, how do you wax showerboard? Spread a thin coat and buff?
Carrie12345
We just got the shower board a couple of weeks ago, so I can't speak to long term use, but the kids have been constantly doodling. Anything that doesn't come off easily with a rag has come off fine with white board spray (came with one of our older sets of markers.) The stuff isn't child-friendly, so I wouldn't use it every. single. time, but it's effective.
mommymilkies
I should wax mine. I agree, details, please! We've had ours for...3 years maybe? Anyway, ghost writing once in awhile comes off with Mrs. Meyers or Magic Eraser.
JudoMom
Ours has been up for almost 8 years. I use rubbing alcohol to clean it periodically and it still looks great.
MomOfOneFunOne
AMDG I used a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of water and alcohol when it needed it.
Vida Winter
I'm starting to get excited to get this in place - I wanted a chalkboard for the longest time but never did find a large one. This will be even better!
Alte Veste Academy
As far as how to wax, I wouldn't know. DH had oldest DS do it. As far as I know, he followed the instructions on the container. I do know it was Turtle Wax though. :tongue_smilie:

This will be even better! AMDG You can buy chalkboard paint and do a whole wall/room/house! I've never used it, though, so can't vouch for how well it stands up. Stellalarella
We just used shower board to refurbish an old, old card table. Thanks for the tips. I hope we have turtle wax out in the shop.
shawthorne44
There is white board paint too. They did that at work a year-ish ago. Ghost writing problems from the beginning.
Arboreal TJ
Home Depot sells 2'x3' sheets of galvanized steel for $20. You could have a magnetic dry erase board in fashionable stainless steal :-)
Mom22ns
We've had ours for 3 years now. It was great the first year, but ghosts badly now. It cleans completely with whiteboard cleaner (which I bought a gallon of long ago). Thanks for the thread! I am going to buy turtle wax today though and see if I can recondition mine and get it back to erasing completely!!
