well that is how we have always played it

we have always played Monopoly by this rule.

How about you?

the only deviation from the rulebook that we have is that all money from  chance/ community chest goes into the center of the board and the person who lands o free parking gets the cash.

Does your family play Monopoly different to the rules?

I think this is another common "house rule", but it also makes the game take much longer, as it puts more cash into the game.

Yep, that's how we play it. We also try to sucker other players into lopsided trades/deals throughout the game that rank up there on the ethical scale near payday loans and Enron. Granted, I spend most of my Monopoly playing time lately trying to snatch up Echo Canyon Coaster instead of Boardwalk.

I am guessing they are names in the American version?

I have only played the English version with names of London streets and train stations

Echo Canyon Coaster is the "big blue property" in Monopoly Junior. Boardwalk is the one on the US adult version. It never occurred to me that the UK edition would obviously have different properties. Duh!

We've always played it that way too.  I thought that was standard.   :)

I didn't know about this rule until just a couple weeks ago when we pulled the game out to play during mil's visit. We were checking the rulebook for something else when I found the rule mentioned in the article. So we have always played the wrong way--you have to land on the property to buy it.

And we play that the fines go in the middle and you get it if you land on Free Parking. But we already knew that wasn't an official rule. Playing by the rules would certainly make the game go faster. I keep petitioning for skipping the Free Parking bonus $$ but am always overruled by the rest of the family. "House rules, Mom! We always play this way." Next time I will mention the property auction; that should be interesting!

I never knew about the rule mentioned in the article. We always did the free parking rule that y'all have mentioned above.

Whenever I played with the kids I ALWAYS cheated by "forgetting" to collect money from passing go on nearly every turn.

We didn't play very often because the games took too long and it was boring.

We tend to stick with games that take less than an hour to play.  Our favorites right now are Pandemic (cooperative) and Castle Panic (also cooperative).

But quite suitable for these dollar using members of the British Commonwealth. ;)

Here, too. ;)

I grew up playing the US version, of course, but dh's family had the English version as above.  The names are different, but I could never remember all the names anyway -- just that the pale blue ones are crappy and the dark blue ones are the best and whenever someone buys the dark blue one next to 'GO', the whiney kids throw all their money on the board and cry up a little tantrum, which means the game is over.

We played it correctly as soon as my next oldest brother ('the rules freak') could read. We never did the Free Parking rule and I'd never even heard of it until I married dh. He thought it was a real rule.

That would never fly with 'the rules freak.'

However, the game always lasted forever because we were nice to each other and always made sure everyone had at least one property set. Too much forgiveness for capitalism. We usually acknowledged the great superiority of 'the rules freak' and moved on to other things.

You should look up Monopoly versions. There are many, many versions available. We had the Star Wars version but never played it, so I donated it to a family through this board last Christmas. The young boy was a huge Star Wars fan and I figured that even if he didn't like the game, he'd like all the cool figurines. I could have sworn we had a Monsters Inc version, but I don't see it on the whole Monopoly versions list.

DH knew about the rule to auction properties but i didn't. We never played that way. We definitely played with money in the kitty though. Sometimes to shorten the game, we would deal out properties before the game began. That was when the kids were really young. We'd hold back on the most expensive ones to see if anyone could land on them. We did do deals, in nice ways, to trade properties so we could have matched sets. I'd hate to play Monopoly with a ruthless player. I'd probably cry. :)

I think that rule makes sense when playing in a group, but usually when I play with DD it's just the 2 of us. We infuse extra cash to make the game go faster--each start with $1000 extra, house rules for double payday if you land on go (and triple if you get there by drawing a card), and Free Parking starts with $500.

We may use the 'other player can buy if you turn it down' rule next time, but I doubt we'll auction it.

We play lots of monopoly here! We typically set up the game board on an out of the way table and each day set the timer for an hour and play til the timer goes off. So we don't really care how long one actual game lasts. We've done this since the kids were really little and we had to talk/coach them through the whole thing.

We tried the bidding thing once when they were little but it kind of confused them and tended to devolve into a shouting match. Now that they are older we should give it another go.

We play with free parking jackpots, and we also do races. If two people land on the same square, we stick a $50 from the bank under the board with just the edge showing. The first of the two players to make it around the board (and remember that the cash is there!) gets the prize.

We used to say that all the one dollar bills were five hundred dollar bills and just round up transactions to the nearest $5. Then we gathered money from a couple of sets and put it all together so the bank never runs out of bills. We love that everyone can collect (and lose) a pile of cash, yet the game goes on. We actually make it to the point where there are houses and hotels on much of the property. When guests join us for play, we have to explain that we play by House Rules - our house, our rules! We love any quirks they share to add to the game. Anything goes as long as its agreed to before the start of play and not changed halfway through the game.

Sometimes it feels like we are playing that crazy game that Hawkeye and Pierce used to play on M*A*S*H. But that's okay, we like it that way.

I own a never touched version featuring the National Parks! My MIL gave it to me for Christmas one year. It is actually very cool but we never play Monopoly. I played a lot growing up and have never read the rules and until now thought everyone got the money when they landed on free parking! Maybe we will play Monopoly tonight after we watch the Dr Bronners documentary! ;)

We play the auction rule. It does make things go faster.  We do have a few house rules:  money in the middle for Free parking, start the game with 2-3 properties each, and double paydays if you land on go.  Actually, I'm not sure if some of those are real rules, I haven't read the directions in a while!!  :D

I knew about the auction rule but haven't played it that way. We do the free parking money too.

We have Star Wars and Galveston, TX versions of Monopoly, and I really want to get the Doctor Who version just to say I have it. I hate playing Monopoly though. Takes too long and it's boring IMO.

We do the auction rule, it does make it go faster but it also lets people team up against each other. For example, three people are playing. Pop lands on St. James and says he doesn't want it. Boy#1 bids $1, Boy #2 says “sure you can have itâ€. Boy #1 and Boy#2 repeat this over and over to allow each other to get cheap property until Pop (my Dad) gets smart and starts buying stuff. :) We also had to institute our own rules: all bids had to be in increments of $10 and they couldn’t be over the price of the property. Otherwise the auctions were lasting forever and they were driving up the price of things like Boardwalk. Now if something goes up for auction and you really want it you know to just offer the actual price.

We also do the Free Parking cash rule and the double-payday when landing on Go rule (taught to us by a French exchange student so known in our house as “Claire’s ruleâ€).

Our set also has a “Speed Diceâ€. I LOVE the speed dice because it makes the game really fast. We almost always are able to finish a game and at most it takes a couple of hours. The dice basically make it so you can buy property faster and then once all the property is bought you are forced to land on other people’s properties, therefore making it faster for people to run out of money.

Also...it’s kind of a cliche but I love Monopoly for elementary math practice. Great for practicing money skills .

I never knew about that rule - it would have helped.  We shortened the game by drawing lots for some properties at the beginning of the game and allowing building on a single property (rather than a set).  We had Hong Kong Monopoly, and my boys learned to play in Mandarin in China.  At one point, they counted high numbers better in Chinese than in English.

Over the years we have developed a set of House Rules - mostly to speed up the game so we didn't die of boredom.  All $$$ paid goes to free parking, including houses and hotels.  Properties handed out in sets at the beginning (random number), that sort of thing.

Oh and we have had several sets over the years that have been combined.  Currently we play using the regular monopoly board and money with Lord of the Rings cards, tokens and houses/fortresses.

The worst version of Monopoly ever?  The one with the electronic bank and the cards you had to swipe....aarrgh!  Too much hassle!
