Abbeygurl4
I've been on Lo Loestrin due to very heavy periods for the past 2 years. I think they may be responsible for my depression. I've been toying with the idea of quitting the pill but I'm worried about heavy periods. I'm 49 and I'm hoping they will eventually stop SOON. Can I counter the effects by taking vitamins or herbs or something? I'm hoping I don't have to choose between crying and bleeding.
Mommy22alyns
Yes, they can. I can't take them for that very reason.
gardenmom5
I attended a lecture by Ben Lynch ND (www.mthfr.net) where this came up as more of an aside. BCpills can mess with the methylation cycle. a messed up methylation cycle can, among many things, cause depression.
Dahliarw
Yes. Have you looked into alternative medicine to relieve your heavy periods? I've had friends who have had good luck with acupuncture. I would go see an ND at least to see if there are some natural alternatives.
Flowing Brook
If you are open to natural remedies dr. Schultz has a wonderful formula that will help with heavy periods. It will also help with depression if it is hormonal. Red raspberry tea helps with heavy periods as well.
LucyStoner
Yes, depression can be caused or worsened in some women by BCPs.
OH_Homeschooler
The last time I was on BCP I was a raging lunatic. Definitely some depression, which possibly manifested as blind rage half the time. I was very sad and very angry, it was terrible.
Rosie_0801
Talk to a chiro about the heavy periods, since it can be a structural issue.
Maela
I don't know if I was depressed, but definitely less happy. And my libido was very low! I haven't been on BCP in seven years, and I'm so much happier! I would definitely see if there's a other option for you!
TravelingChris
You could have an endometrial ablation. It worked for me.
LucyStoner
And my libido was very low! Same here. I didn't have any clear depression issues on them, but with such a low libido while on them I decided that it completely defeated the point and found a better (for me) BC method. fairfarmhand
yup. One of a hundred reasons why I am glad I got off of them.
lavender's green
Yes, I can't take them. Have you looked into the Mirena? That didn't have an effect on my mood, and reduced my heavy periods to mere spotting.
Candid
Talk with your doctor(s) and don't quit cold turkey unless they tell you to. Sometimes with depression the cold turkey quit will make things worse, so you won't to make sure they are aware of what you are doing and have a plan in place to help you switch.
