Help diagnosing what is wrong with our young cat

Last September our 14-year-old cat lost his battle with cancer. His companion, who just turned fourteen, slept for days and did very little.  We brought home a two-month -old kitten from the pound to be his new friend. I intended to get an older cat, but was captivated by this young lady's face. She had all her shots and was checked by our vet before we brought her home. "Thea" is a beautiful marble Bengal with a loving and mischievous personality. About five weeks ago, her behavior began to change. She stuck close to me and stopped sticking her head under the small cat bed to overturn it and oust our other cat. She was eating less and losing weight.

On the first vet visit, she had a low fever and was given a course of antibiotics and fluids.  A week later, we were able to have her see our regular vet and she ran an extensive panel of bloodwork. Her heart and lungs sound great, but her lymph nods are slightly swollen. At that point she was running a high fever. All of the bloodwork came back negative and after consulting with a specialist our vet ran the test for FIP as she had elevated proteins in her blood. We were sure that was the case as so many of her symptoms were the same. The night before the test came back negative, the fever broke. She started playing and eating and seemed to be on the rebound - except she's not!

She is continuing to lose weight and she has sick cat fur. We went back to the vet yesterday (third one in the clinic). Somehow we had neglected to get a stool ample so we are now waiting for the results for that. They don't think worms are likely and the next step is to run a series of five x-rays. She seems worse for the trip to the vet and the mirtazipine given for her appetite seemed to distress her.

She is only a year old and we are in love with her. Does anyone have any other ideas? Basically the x-rays are looking for a congenital defect.

Did they test for FeLV and FIV? I'm sure these tests have been done, but you mentioned only FIP.  I would be inclined to retest, in case there was a false negative for FeLV/FIV.

I hope you get some answers soon. I can imagine how frustrating this would be.

FIP was my first thought, too. I wouldn't rule it out as it can be tricky to diagnose. And I agree that FIV and FELV need to be ruled out if they haven't already been.

You said she was given antibiotics -- did it seem that she responded to them? It would be unusual in such a young cat, but she could possibly have a kidney infection. If she responded to the antibiotics but they weren't continued long enough, the infection could rebound and the symptoms return.
