I.Dup.
We have always done CAT complete battery, but this year I decided to go with the CAT survey from Seton. I'm not too happy how the results compare with the layout of the results from family learning. He's going into 3rd grade. It says his composite score is 57. That seems really bad to me. His highest score was in vocabulary at a NS of 7, his lowest score was in language mechanics with a NS of 4. How can he be so high in vocabulary but so low in language mechanics, what does that mean? He got "average" for Language expression, Math Concept & Application, Language total, and Math total. He got "slightly above average" for Comprehension, Math computation, and reading total. He got "well above average" for vocabulary. He got "slightly below average" for language mechanics. So "average" across the board with a composite of 57. Is that really terrible? I'm thinking about ordering the CAT full battery and having them take that also, but they are begging me not to. Plus, it would cost another $70 or so. 8filltheheart
Language mechanics is knowing the proper use of punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and grammar. None of those scores would alarm me for a 2nd grader. It could be as simple as you having covered material that emphasized different skills than those on the test. Standardized tests prior to third grade are really rather limited in their info. I would just make sure that going forward that you make sure mechanics is covered. I.Dup.
Language mechanics is knowing the proper use of punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and grammar. Duh, of course. Yes, he did miss a couple questions from that section, and I will definitely make sure we cover that thoroughly from here on out. Thing with the CAT survey (which I used once now) is that there are so few questions that one or two wrong makes it seem like this huge difference. yes, that is what I realized. I went over the test and he made a few careless mistakes. I KNOW he knew the answers to those problems but even still I was expecting his score more in the 80s. Obviously missing a couple does make a big difference on this one! Thank you both!
