goldberry
We need a name for a photography business, primarily weddings and family portraits, kids, that type of thing. DH is determined that the name also be available as a .com. (As in (name)photography.com) EVERY NAME IS ALREADY TAKEN. Yet he is determined about this. So any ideas about a name that might not be specifically related to photography (and hence not already taken) but that has a nice, happy sound? For example "Blue Sky Photography" which is already taken, but something like that. Or even a made up sort of word. We are really struggling! Please share your creativity! NicAnn
I have taken several business and marketing classes/seminars for my business and they all recommended the same thing-use your real name. Colorado Perkins Photography, or if your first name is uncommon go with that. I changed my business name to my real name some years back, and I've had a lot more people recognize me within the industry.

I changed my business name to my real name some years back, and I've had a lot more people recognize me within the industry. Do you think that's specific to the photo/art industries? Because in other industries, for example when I hear "Joe Jones Electric Company" I always think it sounds a little "small town".
lailasmum
I've just named my photography business. I struggled with the same thing. In the end I have a name which is not my name. It works for me because no one seems to spell my name right so its more memorable. I think that if you can use your name do. You can also use variations of your name. Maybe maiden surname - married surname photography. Or your initials. Or middle names or meld name parts together or your first names or first and middle. You could also use studios instead of photography. (Are you part of ReStart by any chance?)
5of5
Also, don't rule out going with a .NET or .ME domain as opposed to .COM; it might open up some additional possibilities for you.

Kebo
YellowRaysPhotography.com GoldenHourPhotography.com HappyPixPhotography.com OR find a name you like that is taken and call it Studios instead of Photography....e.g. Serendipity Studio Edited to Add: Or Images, as in Serendipity Images Other ideas: Luxe Images or Luxe Studio (Luxe Photography is taken) This is a kind of a play on Lux (latin for light) and luxe meaning deluxe or luxurious And assuming you are in Colorado: Lark Images ...... the Lark Bunting is the state bird. You could fancy it up with Blue Lark Studio, etc. Red River Photography/Images
goldberry
Ok.....our daughter's middle name is Rose. So we just registered MiaRosaPhotography.com....It means "my rose" in Italian. Is that too dorky since we are not actually Italian? I like the way it sounds though...
Lanny
In addition to MiaRosaPhotography.com if you are interested in something that is currently registered (as you discovered, most .COM names that you might think of are already registered), consider buying an existing domain name, from the current Registrant. This could cost you anywhere from $15 to many thousands. There are tons of domain names for sale. We have ours listed for sale on Sedo and on Afternic. GLhttp://sedo.com/us/home/getting-started/?language=ushttp://www.afternic.com/ P.S. Your DH is correct. If at all possible, it should be a .COM domain name. The 2nd choice would be .NET but a .COM domain name is much better, for a variety of reasons.
GSOchristie
Most photographers that we know use their names, but one of our friends uses Fusion and another Red Tree Photography. Another fried uses Todd Pellow Photography, but his website is tpellowe.com, so that might be an option.
acsnmama
Using your name isn't small town, especially when it comes to Photography. Personally using your name, or a name, rather than "Blue Sky" defines your business. When people want to tell their friends, they aren't saying, "so and so, of Blue Sky Photography" they will just say your name (or your daughters name, or maiden name, or whatever you choose) but it's still a name none the less, rather than something more generic. lailasmum
I think Mia Rosa Photography is great. I think the thing with using your name in photography is because photography is an art form so it feels right to attribute it to an artist, but on the other hand loads of photographers have awkward names that don't work well if people can't spell or remember them. And tons of hugely successful photographers don't use their own name.
