TheReader
I'm at a loss, and you'd think I would know this by now, but I don't. So, here goes. My 8 yr old (who has dyslexia and auditory processing disorder along with a slew of other LDs) likes to have a story read to him at bedtime, and honestly, he needs it as part of his work on comprehension. I wasn't sure how he'd do with chapter books, so we started off with McBroom's Wonderful One Acre Farm (he loved it), then read The Magic Finger, The BFG and James & The Giant Peach (he loved all three of those); next he grabbed Ralph S. Mouse and we are all finding it a much more difficult read. I find myself skipping the verbose, overly-descriptive bits --- seems Cleary will start a sentence or paragraph leading up to an action but fill it up with description along the way, and my boy can't follow that. The description in the middle distracts him from the action, so by the time we get to the actual action, he's forgotten the beginning. So, I skip over the descriptions and we get through, but he has said more than once that this is a more confusing story -- especially in the beginning when there were multiple characters to keep straight, etc. We'll finish it, as we're nearly done and I've figured out how to read it so it works for him, but what should we go to next?? I do have Charlie & The Chocolate Factory as well as The Glass Elevator; haven't read them in a while but I was thinking they were a bit above the level of James & the Giant Peach, no? And, what else can we read with him? Any suggestions that will catch the interest of a super active 8 yr old boy, yet fall around this same comprehension level? Thanks for any ideas! Down_the_Rabbit_Hole
My husband just read Masterpiece to my dd 8 and both loved it. Have you also tried Audio Books for car rides? We get a lot of books listened to this way and keeps the mind active while sitting in the car. Currently we are listening to the Percy Jackson series, which is another book good for read aloud. TheReader
I'll check into Masterpiece; never heard of it. We don't do audio books in the car -- the background noise is a bit too much for him in the car; he can't focus well enough on the words with all the distraction of being in the car. We do have the Percy Jackson books; I'll have to see if he's ready to hear those out loud....that might be an idea. Thanks!
sixpence1978
My DD has dyslexia and also would struggle with long, drawn-out descriptions sometimes. I read her Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at age 6 and she LOVED it. I would say go ahead and start it. She has also loved listening to the Harry Potter books, the Chronicles of Narnia, Tales of Despereaux, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We have all of those except the Miraculous Journey....; will add those to our list. DH was hoping to try the Narnia books, but I wasn't sure, so that's especially good to hear. Thanks! Aurelia
Virtually anything by Roald Dahl has been a hit here. Also, the Kate DiCamillo books, particularly Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Desperaux. He may also like The Boxcar Children, Pippi Longstocking, or the Moomintroll series.
