crazyforlatin
Her mom says they seem to be blackheads but her daughter has not entered puberty. Could a little girl of 9 years old have these before puberty? She washes her face every night with a washcloth, no soap. What are some solutions for her? Does this portend to something more in the future, like acne?
crazyforlatin
Thanks for the suggestion! In fact, I should get it for myself as well. I've never had clear skin and it got worse during and after pregnancy. I take zinc but it may not be appropriate for a young girl. Do blackheads just come out by themselves? I'm wondering if using those blackhead removers would help - my niece has very soft skin.
MollyAnn
Blackheads are a sign of dehydration. She needs to drink more water, cut out any soft drinks and juice.
8circles
Blackheads are a sign of dehydration. She needs to drink more water, cut out any soft drinks and juice. Seriously? I never knew. I'm not good at getting enough water and have always had blackheads.

My niece has a problem with drinking water. It seems to be a constant struggle to have her drink the minimum per day. Her parents don't allow soft drinks or juice. I need to be drinking more water too. I've also had somewhat of a problem with blackheads since puberty.
Chris in VA
We love those Biore strips. They remove blackheads quickly. Then gently washing with Dove or Cetaphil or another super-mild soap (or none, depending) seems to keep things clear. Look on interest for the gelatin/milk masque, too--cheap, effective and fun to use.

My ds17 has blackheads which I think turn into acne. I've watched two do that and the red marks left behind aren't fading. He refuses to use the strips because his sisters have told him it hurts for a minute. I've tried to use the bobby pin to squeeze them out, but it's not successful on his nose. I don't think the face wash is working. I'm thinking the blackheads are too deep to be washed out?

Beauticians apply quick pressure when they do brows; they are trained to do that to relieve pain, I wonder if that would help.

This pad is supposed to be magical (and cheap!): http://www.sephora.com/precision-pore-cleansing-pad-P262041 That plus a wash meant for blackheads (usually contain glycolic acid) may help. Keep both in the shower and use at the end when the skin is steamed open.
gardenmom5
some food allergies can cause profound skin reactions - she may be allergic. this nice thing is, once an allergic food is removed, the reactions will calm down and go away.
tammyw
dd10 has had some blackheads along her mouth line, but she drinks tons of water (pretty much nothing else really).
wapiti
Another option to try: wash regularly with coconut oil and warm water - massage some coconut oil into the skin and then rinse with warm water - with or without a washcloth, depending on whether it seems necessary. The coconut oil can help loosen dirt and grease without drying out the skin and is believed to have some anti-germ properties as well. I don't think it's unusual at all for a 9 y.o. to get a few blackheads (though I remembered being a little surprised when it started happening with my oldest)
Chris in VA
The gelatin/milk is nasty smelling, but easy to peel off. I don't think it's as effective as Biore. Oh, and you can slightly dampen the strip to make it easier to peel--just not a lot.

I'm also taking notes since DD is just a little younger and I'm starting to notice something on her nose, but you have to look really closely. I do remember Biore strips way back in the 90’s and I think it helped with my brother; it might be more effective with younger, softer skin, perhaps. some food allergies can cause profound skin reactions - she may be allergic. this nice thing is, once an allergic food is removed, the reactions will calm down and go away.If I have something with butter, I breakout kind of quickly, but I never thought that blackheads could be the result of a food allergy. Poor kid - she loves yogurt. When I was a teenager, a nutritionist instructed me to avoid all dairy products for better skin. She smells like a coconut cupcake, very fresh-faced. I had read somewhere that it's noncomedogenic. Both girls will enjoy washing their faces. :)
