what kind of spelling list is this?

Recommended Posts

My boys spelling lists from school is every weekly and not every night. Spelling test was friday or monday depending on the class teacher. Depending on the spelling curriculum used by the teacher, I had gotten themed lists, phonics list and list that don't make sense to me but I didn't analysed those so there could be a pattern.

I was really flummoxed by this, because the only spelling lists we ever did in homeschool were word families (ie 10 words with 'ai' in them) and Magic 100 words (similar to dolch words). But I guess you're right, it must be vocab from something they were reading or writing at school.

It may be words that are in that week's reading book selection. That can lead to some really bizarre lists.

Yes, this. My dd's school sends home every week, one paragraph for studied dictation and a list of 20 words, most of which are from that paragraph.

I think you are probably right.

But they get 60 words a week, which is an awful lot for my ds with severe spelling difficulties to master, especially when they are not in any logical groups. It takes over an hour to do all his homework, which I think is excessive at that age. At the moment we are starting mid year break, so he'll be doing our home curriculum for 2 weeks, but I think we'll have to negotiate for less homework when he goes back to school.

Yes, it's not uncommon to have words that aren't related.  I was reading a book about it lately (well, I was reading the free snippets that were available online on Google Reader of a book about it), and it seems like there isn't actually any longitudinal difference between kids who learn spelling by rule/theme, and those who learn by random words.  Many teachers prefer the random word method, because with the rule/theme method, kids just remember the rule and apply it to all the words on the test (Oh, all the words on this test have an oo that make the "uh" sound) without actually thinking about any of them or learning it.

60 words a week is nuts, though.

In NZ there are 8 wordlists used by most schools. List 1 is the first 10 sight words followed by the next 20 in list 2, list 3 is the next 50 and so on. You progress through the lists as you master the last 1. My son had 5 words a week in year1, in year 2 he has 8 so I would say 60 is a bit strange.
