Brainstorming help for an alternative 6th grade year

I keep on reading and re-reading this post, trying very hard to give myself permission to do something like this for a year. (Ds will be in 6th, Dd in 4th.) Diverging from the path we have been trudging along on makes me nervous. 

 

Still, the older kids of Lori D. and Nan in Mass are more than fine!

We are going to step off the academic treadmill and do something like this next year (and perhaps a bit beyond). I think it's the perfect time to do it, in middle school. Our girls will be 6th, 4th, and 4th graders. They are looking forward to "Doing Other Things." ;)
