TheApprentice
I'm putting together a reading list for my son (5th) who is an average reading. This is what I've gotten thus far: The Incredible Journey Riki Tiki Tavi Shiloh Charlotte's Web Cricket in Time Square Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Stuart Little Songs of Hiawatha and other poems Castle in the Attic I counted 6 out of 9 books about some type of creature. Other options, please, that do not include animals. And remember, he is not an advanced reader.
BatmansWife
The Borrowers (there are a few in the series) Robinson Crusoe the old Hardy Boys books The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Treasure Island White Fang Call of the Wild The Swiss Family Robinson My Side of the Mountain That's all the boy type books I can think of off hand. Some of these have easier reader versions. ETA: Oops...I forgot about the no animals.
Farrar
Well, my top three picks if you haven't done them yet would be My Side of the Mountain, Frindle, and Holes.

Murphy101
These are books my kids read approx 4-6 grade. Hope it helps. Does your son like animals? There's nothing wrong with using that as the theme for your book list if he does. Especially if it encourages him to enjoy the reading more. As long as the literature is quality, I wouldn't mind it having a lot of critters in it. :) 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Verne The Children’s Homer by Colum Kidnapped by Stevenson Captains Couragous by Kipling Heidi by Spyri Swiss Family Robinson by Wyss The Once and Future King by T. Hunter
My son read a lot of biographies at this age. Look at historical fiction lists. Look at 5th grade in context of other years, and as long as the same imbalance is not carried out year after year, it's less of a concern. boscopup
Does he not like animal books? If he likes them, I see no problem with your list. Some others... Homer Price Charlie and the Chocolate Factory The Phantom Tollbooth My son liked all of those quite a bit.

TheApprentice
Great book ideas. It's not that he hates animals, but I just want more balance, like previous posts have mentioned. I knew you all could help me. :hurray:
