Workbook supplement to RightStart (so we, at least, get something done)

Recommended Posts

We have RightStart A and it has not been getting done. At all. We have had it for the past year and we are only to lesson 35 out of 77. #mommyfail

I love the program and I want to continue with it in some aspect, but I just need some workbook-based program to add in on the days I do not get my act together. My daughter loves workbooks, so throw some suggestions at me!

(Obviously 1st grade math will be teacher intensive to some extent, but I need the options that require the least amount of work from me. My daughter catches on quickly. And I don't want anything with manipulatives since we already have that.)

Mommy fail for RS A here too. I just don't like RS A and don't pull it out. My oldest started in B so I hadn't used A before. I'm very tempted to order the new edition of A to see if it would work better for us. It has shorter lessons which I think would really help me teach it rather than stop part way through a lesson. But at this point my 5yo (6 this month!) is really old enough for B. So I've kind of abandoned A at this point and I'm waiting for the new B to come out in a few months.

In the meantime, I had Miquon sitting around that I'd purchased for my oldest and never really used. So I pulled it out and it is working well for us. Just saw your note that you don't want more manipulatives, so maybe it wouldn't work for you.

I like MM as a supplement for RS, but probably not until 1st grade.

Rightstart has Activities for the AL Abacus & Worksheets for the AL Abacus. Acitvities for AL was their original program before they created graded levels, and the worksheets is practice pages that work with RS.

I'd recommend these! I attempted to supplement RS at different times with SM and MM, but it was never necessary and didn't really mesh well. I had the activities and worksheets sitting on my shelf the whole time, and in hindsight I could have just used those (along with more card games) instead.

Are those worksheets included in the packages? I have been having the same issues as the OP only with RS B. We just haven't been using it consistently enough for it to be working for us.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I think I pinpointed that the program moves too slowly sometimes, and the spiral approach is killing me, so I did away with it. I went through the book and only highlighted the new stuff and we breezed through 5 lessons this morning in 15 minutes. So much better for us all. It might not always work, but there is no point repeating stuff when I already know it is cemented. She was happy, I was happy.

I actually have MM 1, so I think we can start it soon. We are now to practicing our addition facts, so it will be perfect review. I am also going to look into the abacus worksheets and activities.

And to whoever mentioned Horizons, I was actually thinking that in the beginning since it is so different. It isn't totally off my radar right now. Thanks for that recommendation, as well.

Ok, I was just checking out there site and I am confused as to what you are talking about.

- Are the worksheets the ones that come with the program, or something supplemental?

- When you speak of the activities, are you talking about the games?

Would you mind linking?

They are all sold separately from the levels. However, it looks like the "cards for math games" are actually included in the Level B starter kit now (http://store.rightstartmath.com/starterkitlevelb.aspx). I don't recall them selling it that way, back when I purchased Level B. I had bought the games kit separately, but it doesn't look like RS does that anymore.

Thank you so much!!!

And you only get the games kit if you order the deluxe package, which we did not do. Looks like I have some things to add to my list...
