MIch elle
I'm starting EFM this Sept. and I'm SO very excited to get started! I've wanted to do it for YEARS.
Chris in VA
Yes, I'm in my third year this fall. Right now I am reading the book they are using for church history. Wishbone Dawn is a mentor in Canada. You can ask me anything and I will give you an earful...um...I mean I'all try to answer.:-)
Seasider
Is this exclusive to your denomination?
Starr
I did it, ack, about 25 or 30 years ago. :svengo:
Chris in VA
No, anyone can join. You can even do it online, but to me the community is the best part. They are completely changing it this year, using textbooks.

MIch elle
You can ask me anything and I will give you an earful...um...I mean I'all try to answer.:-) Will I need the Oxford Study BIble? Do they provide it with your fee?
WishboneDawn
I'm not a mentor yet! :) I'll be doing training this summer. Can't wait! You will need to buy your own Bible.

I have many BIbles (NRSV, ESV, NIV, etc). Do I need the Oxford Bible?
Chris in VA
No, any will do.:-) One book I did find useful for balance was Josh McDowell's Evidence that Demands a Verdict. Although he's pretty fundie/literal, he has a fabulous section refuting Documentary Hypothesis. Even if you end up going with it, it gives you another perspective. WishboneDawn
Any will do as Chris said but the Oxford annotated has wonderful footnotes and is the Bible I always find myself reaching for.
Chris in VA
Wanted to add, my husband likes the Oxford and the ESV. A lot of Episcopal Seminaries use the Ox. (I'm an NIV girl, myself, but that's neither here nor there.:-) )
Chris in VA
Oh, one more thing--I have LOVED the Archeological Bible. It provided tons of info, esp that first year.
AvasMom
I want to do it but someone told me that it's mostly retired people because the workload is so intense. Have you guys found that to be true? What's the time commitment between class and homework each week? Is it feasible to do this, homeschool, and work part-time?
AvasMom
Oh, one more thing--I have LOVED the Archeological Bible. It provided tons of info, esp that first year. We just bought this a couple of months ago and love it! I wish it had the apocrypha though.
Chris in VA
I think it's feasible. The program is changing so much this year, I am not sure exactly what the time commitment will be. There's a text (at least one) for each year, as well as two books that all the years will read and discuss. First years read a lot of scripture--nearly the whole OT. But honestly, Many don't read every.thing. Read as much as you can, prepare what you can, and realize you will learn in the group, too. Realistically, I try to budget three hours a week. I am currently pre-reading the Year 3 book, as it's 1100 pages...lol! The readings, lessons/reflections/discussions of lessons is really just a small part of EFM. Well, not a small part, exactly, but it isn't really a "bible study" as some think. You are learning to think theologically, in community--TRs, that is, Theological Reflections, are a big part of the process. (That's personally my favorite part!) MIch elle
Received my EfM materials last night (year 1). Let the journey begin! In the meantime before my reading start, I've been watching Open Yale Course Introduction to the Old Testament In the past, I've watched TC Old Testament by Amy-Jill Levine and TC The Story of the BIble by Prof. Luke T. Johnson (both excellent). Has your group started yet? What do you think of the new books and guide (first unit)?
