klmama
I'd like to watch Cyrano de Bergerac on video with the dc, but there are a lot of different versions available. Do you know of one that maintains a good pace, keeps to the original script, and is appropriate for elementary students should they choose to watch? redsquirrel
Steve Martin's "Roxanne" is so. close. but not for elementary kids. Too bad because it is really good...well... and a different ending. Ok, no good. I failed. But I will give you a bump! But it might be fun for older kids to watch Roxanne AFTER they are familiar with the original. Steve Martin wrote the screenplay. He does love the story of Cyrano and wanted to keep it alive in modern cinema. There are entire chunks of dialogue that are right out of the (translated into English) story and yet sound modern and fresh.
Farrar
That's funny. My first thought was also Roxanne. I'd show to middle schoolers.
klmama
Thanks, but Roxanne is exactly what I DON'T want. If you've seen any of these, can you recommend one that is clean enough for little kids and follows the script all the way to the end? http://www.amazon.com/Cyrano-Bergerac-Jos%C3%A9-Ferrer/dp/B0000D1FFU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372365723&sr=8-2&keywords=cyrano+de+bergerac+dvd http://www.amazon.com/Cyrano-Bergerac-G%C3%A9rard-Depardieu/dp/B0000YEENU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372365723&sr=8-1&keywords=cyrano+de+bergerac+dvd (with subtitles) http://www.amazon.com/Cyrano-Bergerac-Kevin-Kline/dp/B001HB1JZQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1372365723&sr=8-3&keywords=cyrano+de+bergerac+dvd
Lori D.
Our family really enjoyed the Jose Ferrar version. So much of the original dialogue intact -- lovely! :) ETA: It is in B&W, in case that is a stumbling block for your family...
chelsmm
I watched the Gerard Depardieux (I'm just guessing on the spelling) version when I was in 7th or 8th grade- French class. I really enjoyed it then. I don't know how old your child/ren is/are, but it might be a good choice. Of course, it might be hard with the subtitles if your child isn't reading quickly. J-rap
We watched the Jose Ferrar version and really enjoyed it. It's old and black and white, and I don't think very young children would enjoy it very much, but my high schoolers did.
