I need your favorite ketchup and bbq sauce recipes (looking to control sodium content)

My dad is wanting to make his own ketchup and bbq sauce so that he can control the sodium content.

He's never made either of them before, and neither have I. (I know, can you believe I've never made them! LOL)

So hit me with your favorite recipes. Bonus points if they're already low sodium, but if not, dad and I can adjust that pretty easy.

TIA!

I like to make the sauce from here: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2011/04/barbecue-chicken/

and the asian bbq sauce from here: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2006/08/barbeque-agnostic/

My husband makes a really good bbq and does variations on it (maple bbq, honey bbq, honey or maple chipotle bbq, rootbeer bbq...etc) with regular tomato or tomato sauce rather than ketchup but he just throws it together instinctually and I don't have a clue as to how he does it.

1 medium onion, chopped

1.5 cup beer

3 tsp. chili powder

1 tsp. black pepper

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

1/2 teaspoon ground clove

1 cup dark brown sugar

1 cup water

2 cups ketchup

1/2 cup molasses

1/2 cup yellow mustard
