Mastery Geography? Any programs like this? or how do you do it?

Recommended Posts

Is there a simple program out there for the mastery of geography? The closest I've found is the CC approach with the fold out folders they can check off and find each item, but it doesn't seem like they have made one for the US yet and that is what I'm studying next year :( Although I don't think it would have they memorize the tracing) Thank you!

Thanks for the thread & the Visualize World Geography rec!  To lower the energy barrier for other readers I'm posting the Visualize World Geography homepage.  The downside is that it isn't cheap at $249.

Note that this program aims to enable one to quickly find any country on the map -- to be able to visualize easily what it looks like and where it is.  I think you'd want to add climate/landforms/flora/fauna and cultural info to this ideally, but I do not think the CC program goes that far either.  Does anybody know of something that does?

I believe this curriculum used to be offered all in a very simple book. That means you don't get all the bells and whistles, but you could do it inexpensively, I believe with just the book. I bought a copy of the book years ago for about $10 and never used it. It's a neat idea, but my kids had already learned all the countries using www,sheppardsoftware.com. I can see where it would be perfect for a visual spatial learner.

I have the ye olde style maps from somewhere (Homeschool in the Woods I think) and I mainly use those, assigning the kids to reproduce the map and ~4-10 labels. I do both modern and historical, since my goal right now is to deepen their other readings and make them familiar with the world's shapes. I plan to do Mapping the World with Art sometime in middle school, to get the world's physical geography down. Then I'm going to use / adapt Memorize the World Map for political geography of the World and the USA. (This is a nice, inexpensive PDF. Once in a while the English is clunky, and just looking at all the details for Asia still scares me, but it does break down the countries/states to smaller chunks. I just want to be clear that I own this, but I haven't used it yet. Don't tell my DH  !)
