TheApprentice
If you could purchase a house about 45 minutes from where you currently live, just to get it at about $80,000 less than the purchase price in your current area, would you get it? Basically getting more bang for your buck. The kicker is that your "life" would still be 45 minutes away. My husbands commute daily, and mine on a part-time basis? And I would still continue to homeschool. Plus activities/volunteer position my oldest ds does currently. Just need some objective perspectives. Whereneverever
It depends on how much more home. For me, if it was a better home and an acreage? Yes. For just a nicer home, no.
TheApprentice
This would be an upgrade of from our town home (with very little yard) to about 500 extra sq. ft. and a backyard. But it's still in the suburbs, so not a huge yard, but definitely a step up for us.
QueenCat
Depends.... can you move your "life" to the new area (minus your dh's work)? Or will you start skipping things because you don't feel like driving or gas has gone up? I probably wouldn't.... I'd focus on finding something else in the current area, unless I was willing to move the activities to the new area.
Alte Veste Academy
No. Because it most likely wouldn't truly be more bang for my buck when I factor in gas and our vehicle's wear and tear. Plus, my time is worth something. When we looked at rental houses when we moved here last year, we started looking at the cheaper areas well south of DH's work. Houses there were around $200 cheaper per month than the house we are in. Then I thought about how DH would need a full tank of has weekly ($60x4=$240/month, at the least), but if we looked at the houses closer to his work, we would pay more in rent but less in gas (1 fill-up=$60/month). So we came out almost even in the end, but his drive is about 7 minutes each way instead of 30 and he will have fewer miles and wear and tear on his car. lmrich
NO! I hate driving and running kids to stuff. That is an 1 1/2 hours round trip!!!! Also keep in mind how much it costs to move - not just moving expenses, but blinds, decorative choices, etc..
TheApprentice
Yeah, it would get costly and I actually agree with what you all have said. My husband is willing to make those sacrifices. It is a Brand New house with lots of upgrades, and it was still cheaper. Moving to a house in our current area means buying a resell and probably less square footage. But those travel costs would suck all the disposal income. I think we'll keep looking locally. Thanks for the input.
Mommyof4ks
No, the gas alone would negate savings, and then there is the wear and tear on the cars. The kids would get together with friends less, and we would slowly stop activities over there due to distance and the time it takes to get back and forth, because the kids need more time for school work the older they get. If it were our dream home with a ton of acreage, maybe, but not for 500 sqft and a small yard.
lynn
Unless it was a nicer house on acerage and came with a pool, a good motorcycle and 4 wheeler riding area and perhaps a stocked pond no. I prefer living close in town with all conveniences 10 min away.
TranquilMind
No, not with $4.00 per gallon gas. It simply doesn't make sense to spend many extra hours a week on the road.
*lifeoftheparty*
We are in the same situation. We live in a town home with a postage stamp yard. If we drove farther out, about 45 minutes, we could get a SFH with at least 1000 more sq. feet than we have now. With a giant yard. No way would we do it. And I know this w/o a doubt b/c one of my best friends does it. All of their extracurriculars are here where we are. All of their friends and family. Her DH works where mine does. My DH has a 10-15 min. commute, her DH's is an hour or more. She feels like they never see her DH b/c of work and commute. It's stressful for him. And she is ALWAYS in the car. It means they eat a lot of fast food/take out during the school year. She says that they basically are home to sleep, and that's it, during the school year. Their neighborhood isn't that great, no kids for her DS to play with. No one wants to go all the way out there for play dates. She can't have his birthday parties at home b/c she doesn't want to ask everyone to drive 45-60 minutes to/from. She hates it. It makes her tired and stressed out. She wants to move so badly, but housing 45 minutes away hasn't held as steady as around here, so they wouldn't make enough money on their house to buy here. No way would I do that. I am perfectly happy with my town home :)
momto10blessings
I would consider it if kids were still doing activities 45 min away. Dh can commute, but with kids activities you would never be home. Not worth it to me.
history_junkie
I grew up 45 minutes away from everything we did, and we were just used to it. However, we had acreage and were definitely in the country, not just a nicer suburb.
elegantlion
No. I'm 30 minutes out from most things now. Gas prices truly factor into things. I used to like to just get out and window shop, when you factor in $10 of gas to do that, it's not very feasible. We moved here with the idea I wouldn't work. Now, I'm looking for a job and there are hardly any available, so now I'm looking at a 30 minute commute and there are a variety of reasons why I can't move. I love my house, and we hesitated being this far out in the first place, but I wish I lived closer to more activity.
