Any New Zealanders riding out the storm?

I think my house might take off. 130km gusts here, I'm guessing 100km sustained. My single pane windows are none too good at holding out the rain. I have definitely heard some BAD sounds, like the sounds of roofs being removed.

The science fair is tomorrow and I think it will be WET! The Wairarapa judge has parked her car on our side and plans to take the train under the Rimatukas. Here's hoping we don't get snow!

Just got a call that the upstairs neighbor's plate glass window just shattered. So we are moving the kids out of their room and onto the sofa bed in the lounge. No large southerly facing windows in there. Apparently there is glass all over the path outside and the rain is pouring in. So I am expecting it to start coming in through the ceiling soon. sigh.

Also, hear a tree come down about 20 minutes ago. CRACK! pause CRASH!

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts. And, no, I just cancelled the science fair (well, delayed it). Sigh. The police have asked everyone to stay off the road and inside because of flying debris, and they have closed a lot of the roads including parts of the state highway system because of slips.

My kids did not want to sleep in their room when they found out that the upstairs large plate glass window had imploded with large shards of glass everywhere. Same room, just up a level. They slept in the lounge!

We have 3 trees down on our property, and will need to scaffold the building to replace the window, there was that much damage to the frame.

It sounds like quite the storm! Glad you're all ok and all that needs fixing is "stuff." That's annoying/frustrating, but it's better than having anyone hurt. :grouphug:

I hope the science fair goes well when you can have it.

I have friends in KoroKoro it looked like a big one. I remember a few big ones in Island Bay - they can be scary and those big plate glass windows can explode or implode under pressure.

It pretty much missed us this time - just heavy rain but no floods.

Have you been to the Warhol exhibition at Te Papa?
