BJU Science Users..question :)

If you're not using the tm with BJU stuff, you're missing a chunk of the course. For the science they include extra demonstrations, background info, games and enrichment activities on the cd in the back of the tm, etc. It also has thorough comprehension questions on a variety of levels (recall, inferential, etc.) to ensure comprehension of the text when the student reads. We tended to do a lot of narration and taking what you want from a text in the lower grades, so when we did the BJU science it was kind of this jolt to my dd's system that YES you actually have to notice that, go back and reread. It's good for them.

There are lots of ways to use materials. This year I did the BJU physical science *labs* and skipped the text almost entirely. That's rogue! :w00t: So I'm all for lots of ways of using materials. In general though, if you want the complete BJU course, get the tm.

I've used BJU science from 3rd grade to 8th grade with my kids. The TM is integral to the program, I think. It adds so much depth and fun! It's easy to find it used.

The kit might be helpful to you, but I don't recall needing anything that was too hard to get. I guess it depends on if you have time to gather things or want it all put together for you.

Gayle,

I am not the OP but am considering starting my oldest in BJU this fall. What format do you like the best?

Our desire is that our son can have more independence in science and BJU looks like it incorporates a lot of "learning meat" as well. If independent learning (as much as possible) is the goal what format is best?

Not Gayle, but if that is what you are looking for, then look into the Distance Learning option. The DVD does all the teaching and the labs.
