kfeusse
a bat comes flying into the livingroom from the basement. Scared the living daylights out of me. I rushed upstairs to get my happily resting husband to save me. He comes down stairs and we shut all of the doors but the one to the basement. He grabs a big blanaket to swat at the bat. We really weren't sure what else to do...the bat just kept flying round and round. My husband managed to hit it a couple times...I think we were hoping to just sting it so we could somehow get it outside...but he flew back down to the basement. (this went one for about 30 minutes but after a long day and at 10:30 at night, it seemed a lot longer) We slammed the door shut...but now he is still in our basement and we arn't sure what to do now. Our baement is unfinshed and FULL of boxes and stuff. HOW in the world will we find him...and if we manage to find him..how in the world will we remove him? We are now hoping he is at least sleeping in a rafter or something...but we still don't know what to do now.... any suggestions???
Melissa in Australia
We have bats in our house regularly. What DH does is open at door to outside, and direct the bat towards the door with light.

Melissa in Australia
bats will try to move to the darker area. so progressively turn on room lights towards the room with the door to outside. DH also may hold up a blanket as a sort of wall, but not swishing it around. mostly animals need to be directed patiently, swishing stuff around quickly confuses them
jelbe5
When we were visiting my in laws a few weeks ago a bat came out from somewhere and started flying around. We closed all doors but opened the door to the attached garage and held open the screen. The bat flew into the garage (we then closed the screen door) and out the open garage door. It seemed to help to just close the doors and have one way to exit. I would have been more interested had I not been so freaked out! (Shudder). carriede
Call animal control.
kfeusse
so should we wait until night time then to try to make him escape?
sparrow
We have done the "bop him with pillows until he's stunned and dh can pick him up, with leather gloves, and toss him outside" method and the "close all doors and usher toward open door to the outside" method. Both methods work poorly and typically leave dh and I in hysterics at 1am  . Bats can wedge into the tiniest places. I really doubt you're going to find it unless it comes flying out again. KungFuPanda
Call animal control. We had animal control out to remove a raccoon from our attic. He was telling me stories about how people let the animal get away, and the the family has to go through rabies shots, or they loose a pet to rabies testing. I'd trap the animal then call for local advice.
Matryoshka
Bats can't live long without water. We get them trying to get through the attic door to the upstairs hallway. If we find them after one night, they are hanging on the lower step, we put them in a shoebox and take them outside. If it's two nights, they're hanging there, but it's too late - they're dead. Night Elf
Sorry, no advice from me. I would have also been freaked out and a little squicked out too. If he came from the basement, maybe he'll find his way out through where he came in? I hope he doesn't come back.
