Jean in Newcastle
Dh doesn't want to go out to eat at lunchtime because he says it will be way too crowded. Do you think it will still be unbearable if we go out for dinner? I really really want to go out. Not only do I not want to cook but it is dh's birthday as well as Father's Day. Are there some restaurants that might be better? (And don't say McDonalds!)
Mrs Mungo
Could you order something curbside to pick up and take home? Lots of sit down restaurants have this option. Eta: we do this a lot on Mother's Day because I truly despise going out to crowded restaurants. Ugh.
Jean in Newcastle
I realized that my OP was really unclear because of the word "dinner" which can be used for either lunch or supper. If we waited until supper time, do you think the restaurant crowds will be less?
KungFuPanda
I think your DH is right and that Ms Mungo has an excellent suggestion to make you both happy. I NEVER brave the restaurants on Mother's Day for this reason. DH gets me Indian take-out, the kids pick out a dessert I lke and set the table, and I am one happy Momma. Please don't MAKE him go out if he's not feeling it.
Lara in Colo
I think the more expensive your options, the better your experience will be (with regards to crowds)

If we waited until supper time, do you think the restaurant crowds will be less? No. I think they'll be busy for both lunch and dinner. Your best bet would be take out (we love the parking spots for takeout only!) or go at an odd time like 3pm.
Baseball mom
Between lunch and supper, 3 or 4pm. Maybe it won't be so busy then.
Night Elf
We always go out at an odd time to avoid the crowds. I find between 2pm and 4pm to be good. At night, it would probably have to be 8pm or later. I think the busy dinner time is between 5pm and 8pm. But that's just my guess and what we go by. sparrow
I think your chain kind of places (Applebees/Outback) will be swamped all day. I think local mom & pop places will be fine. We're taking dh to a local pub that has great burgers and the best selection of craft beer in town. He's so excited!
Jean in Newcastle
Hmmm. Maybe I'll call dh's favorite restaurant (which takes reservations) to see what kind of a wait it would be. If we can't get a reservation at a decent hour the take-out option sounds really good.
Baseball mom
Hope you had good luck with your meal. We went to eat about 4pm and there was only 2 other families in there.
Jean in Newcastle
I made a reservation at Stanford's. I assume (hopefully correctly) that since we have a reservation it will not be a wait. We don't leave for about an hour.
Chelle in MO
I made a reservation at Stanford's. I assume (hopefully correctly) that since we have a reservation it will not be a wait. We don't leave for about an hour. You probably won't have much (or any) wait w/a reservation. I hope you have a nice dinner! Happy everything to your dh! We went to O'Charley's with a reservation at 1:00 today and were seated right away. They were busy, but not swamped. Best of all, the server let me use an expired 20% off coupon! We tipped her more than 20%--win/win!
Jean in Newcastle
We got right in. The restaurant was busy but wasn't swamped - just like your experience. We had a lovely dinner.
