She is buying it with her own money. She was thinking around the $130 mark. A really good zoom is important to her. I want it to be a camera that she won't outgrown in a year or two. Can anybody help us pick out one that would be a good choice for her? thanks.

This is the one that kept my dd happy for two years.

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Digital-Camera-Optical-Stabilized/dp/B00728Z8TG/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1371355664&sr=8-15&keywords=panasonic+lumix

Now she has a Nikon D5100 DSLR camera. She saved up for a long time to be able to buy it. It runs around $500. It was a huge step up, but it is a camera that she won't really outgrow.

The Panasonic Lumix is nice, we own one. Here's a tip: visit a pawn shop. We've found nice, nearly new cameras and other electronics for a fraction of the new price, and they usually have a grace period where you can take it home and try it out and if it doesn't work you can return it.
