A few hours in Atlanta???

We're taking a short vacation to GA very soon. We'll spend one day at Six Flags & one evening at a Braves game. What's a low-key, inexpensive "must see" part of Atlanta (preferably indoors) that we could see before the game? We do not want to go to the Aquarium. We'd like for it to be something that the kids have never experienced before.

Also, if you have any tips to make the most of the game & Six Flags, I would love to hear them!

Thank you!

Indoor and inexpensive is tough. And I have no idea what your family has done before for it to be a new experience. :) Also I'm not sure of your kids' ages because I'm on the mobile site.

Do you have museum memberships that would get you reciprocal entrance? Our natural history museum (Fernbank) isn't on par with Chicago or NYC or Smithsonian's, but it has air conditioning.

Center for Puppetry Arts if your kids are younger is fun. There's often a Groupon or some deal for tickets. You could go there then hit the Varsity (world's largest drive in but park and go inside!) before going to the game.

The usual attractions:

Atlanta Zoo (outside, not too expensive with coupons or reciprocal membership)

Stone Mountain (outside and all day excursion and not cheap)

World of Coke (inside, always some deal or coupon)

CNN Center (timed, ticketed tours)

High Museum of Art

Turner Field does a tour that's pretty neat. You get to go in the dugout and on the field.

I'd like to apologize in advance for the pit of despair that Six Flags has become. As long as you're going solely for the rides and not expecting any manner of customer service, you should be fine. ;)

Thanks, Zoobie. My kids are dd13, dd10 and ds7.

Unfortunately, we don't have any zoo or museum memberships this year. We'll investigate those suggestions.

I'm sorry to hear that Six Flags has gone downhill. When I was growing up, it was my favorite amusement park.

Turner Field tour? My husband and son have done this at Turner Field as well as at several other parks around the country and have always enjoyed them. Even if you do not do the tour, you could tour the museum. If it is a night game, I think the tours are available, though they are not for afternoon games. Or something like that.

If you want something a little different, one of our fave places is the Carlos Museum at Emory University. It has an amazing collection of Egyptian artifacts as well as some decent stuff from other ancient civilizations. It is small enough to see everything in 2-3 hours, priced at $8/adult, $6/kid. The campus is a peaceful place for a picnic lunch as well.

Seconding the Carlos Museum (esp. if you're into ancient history) &/or the History Center. Or, you could go hang out at the Varsity & eat. Depending on the day/time you have available, you might be able to go see one of the summer movies at the Fox. I've never done a Fox tour, but that might be pretty interesting too. Right now, the Sundial Restaurant at the top of Peachtree Plaza is under renovation, so it is closed through August. However, you used to be able to ride the elevator up there just to see the views of the city up there. You could call & see if that part of it is still open....

Thank you all so much! We may wind up not really having time to do much more than walk around and eat. We're driving from Athens to a hotel in Austell, and the game is at 7:30. Does anyone know if it is really worth it to go 2 1/2 hours early to the game? Do you have to sit in your game seats, or can you go other places to watch batting practice?

You don't ever have to go to your seats if you don't want to sit in them. :) Usually gates open 3-3.5 hrs before first pitch, and BP starts a half hour before that, so you might be able to catch the end of it. They'll post exact times on the team website.

Oh, I want to go to the History museum!!! But I don't think we're going to have enough time. :-/ I think we are going to the game super-early. My girls are not thrilled with the idea, but the game is really for our baseball-loving boy, while Six Flags is really for them. We're hoping the girls will like it better once we get there. As much as he loves baseball, though, I can't imagine not spending every second there that we can. We live too far from a mlb team to do this very often. I haven't been to a mlb game in over <ahem> 20 years!
