sweetsouthern
Dd is 12 and starting 7th in the fall. We havent done any formal writing, but we still do copywork and dictation. Ive been trying for the last few months to just start her slowly winging it... Letting her pick a topic to write about and write anything at all about it. She cant. This is the most painstaking thing for her. So basicly i need something gentle that will help her write small paragraphs on various topics. Any ideas???? scrapbabe
Well Brave Writer is my favorite thing but it takes a bit to wrap your head around it and it sounds like you want some hand holding now. Essentials in Writing is good for teaching the basic formats of writing. We didn't use it from start to finish but used it as needed. When my son needed to write a research report we watched just the chapters on research reports. It really breaks things down into manageable parts. You might need to go back a level or two for paragraph writing, but its not babyish so it won't matter. I think the author is good about answering placement questions. Hunter
Write On! by Karen Newell. The teacher's manual and two lessons are free. These two lessons are a perfect starter course that will keep a reluctant writer going for at least a month. Make sure to really study the TM. It's REALLY helpful for these 2 lessons and for writing in general. For a writing manual, I recommend Writer's Express. The two later volumes in the series are much more popular than this beginner's manual, but this is the one I like. I'm big on laying a strong foundation, and waiting till a student is developmentally ready to tackle a skill. I really like this foundational volume. IrishMum
Maybe IEW? I know nothing about writing, teaching it or doing it, so IEW has been a god send. I used the DVDs so Andrew does all the teaching. He is funny and my boys love watching the him. I'm really impressed with it :)
