Guest marykbry
Having completed our first full SOTW history cycle, we are looking to go back to Ancients this fall. My ds is 11; dd 9. When we first did Ancients, our approach was mostly answering questions orally, simple narrations, coloring and mapwork, plus some of the activities. With my son being in "6th grade," I was hoping to ramp up his work this year, but the test booklet (which we did not do first time around) looks below his level. I was hoping for something more in keeping with the Volume 4 tests / activities (especially the outlining). I see now that Volume 1 is intended for grades 1-4. Given my son is going into 6th grade, what should I do? I cover history with both children at the same time. How can I ramp things up for him without going over her head? What are some things you have used when you've come around the cycle the 2nd time?

phathui5
I am planning to use this with my oldest when we get back to ancients. He'll be in 8th grade at that point. http://peacehillpress.com/the-history-of-the-ancient-world-from-the-earliest-accounts-to-the-fall-of-rome.html
kiwik
Maybe he could listen to the reading then choose something to reasearch. You would need access to a library of some sort but he may enjoy searching out is own resources and maybe choosing something suitable for you all to share. SOTW1 would be a bit babyish at his age but he may consent to keep you company while you read and eat.
blessed3x
We are in the same place, with ds just turning 11 and we are beginning our second round of Ancients. I would use SOTW with both, then supplement and add more for your ds. I plan to supplement SOTW with a lot of real books using the Truthquest guides and The Story of the Ancient World. They both are have a christian perspective, so please know that up front. Good luck!
EKS
I wouldn't use SOTW again. I love K12's Human Odyssey series for the middle grades and highly recommend it.
kristi26
I have plans available for 1-9 grades using SOTW1 as one of the spines, if you're interested. My free plans focus on Ancient Egypt (term 1), Ancient Greece (term 2), and Ancient Rome (term 3, which isn't posted yet). I also have added an extra spine for each term to go with SOTW so that older kids can read SOTW aloud to younger kids and then have added reading for themselves (at least that's the way I like to do it here). Here's the links for those first two terms:http://themommywriter.blogspot.com/2013/06/free-charlotte-masonliving-bookshands.html and http://themommywriter.blogspot.com/2013/06/free-charlotte-masonliving-bookshands_10.html HTH!
