Suggestions for Latin curriculum

Recommended Posts

I'm just wrapping up my first year of homeschooling, and I'm getting my thoughts together for next year. Next year I'll have DD, gr 4; DS, gr 3; DS, gr 1; DS, K. I think I would like to add Latin next year. I took 2 years of Latin in high school when it was still a spoken language. I don't expect more than a familiarity of the language based on that past experience, but it might help a little. I work two days a week, so I am really looking for something with a video component so they can work on it a little independently on those days. Any suggestions? Thanks.

This, because you have so many dc. If you want something lighter, much lighter, I would suggest looking at Song School Latin. It is a gentle intro.

Those are about the ages my co op kids who are enjoying Song School Latin.

Does Song School have a DVD? If not, is it self-directed?

We love Memoria Press' curriculum. The DVDs have saved my life. I'm learning Latin along with the kids.

I'll take a look at Memoria Press. I'm not familiar with them. I'm curious, KrissiK, I see Prima Latina in your signature. Were you using Prima Latina before Memoria Press? How would you compare them?

Song School does not have a DVD. There is a book and audio. It is the precursor to Latin for Children, also put out by Classical Academic Press. Latin for Children does have a dvd, plus a cd, teacher book, student book and student reader. We liked both programs, but I'd start with Song School for your childrens' ages.

Sorry for the confusion! Memoria Press publishes Prima Latina. We used Prima Latina with both my boys, this past year DS1 was in Latina Christiana and DS2 in PL. next year they'll each move on up to the next book. I think the programs are very straightforward and easy to use. No frills. The DVDs are wonderful. It's not a flashy program, with games and and tricks and fun stuff, but it gets the job done!

Prima Latina is a very simple elementary workbook program. These are all great workbooks to use for Latin in the elementary years. Here are the two main differences between Memoria Press' Latina Christiana and Latin For Children, which are both billed for about 3rd grade. LC is a very organized workbook which primarily teaches vocabulary and paradigms(altho there are some notes on syntax within the TM), while LFC teaches the syntax to the student within its text/workbook. It was designed more for a parent who would be learning along with the student.

So they really are very different in the amount of grammar they cover!

Bonam fortunam!

So helpful! DS, our oldest, is starting 1st grade and I haven't felt confident in choosing curriculum for Latin as I never studied it myself. I settled on Song School plus Classical Conversations memory work (pardigms) to start off with-- would you recommend then that we try LFC around grade 3, rather than LC? It sounds like LC might be too redundant if we already covered paradigms.
