Whereneverever
Miserable doesnt begin to explain how I feel. And dh is a pastor and sort of busy for the day. He is supposed to try to run out for my abx in a few hours and drop them off. Any tips for managing all my other kids and genius self care? I just want to huddle under blankets and sob. NicAnn
So sorry! It is miserable. First off, stick the kids on the computer or tv or whatever you need to do. Then get in bed with a giant glass of orange juice, hot cup of tea, and a bottle of water. Then nurse that baby like crazy. Massage your breast, and try and hand express more milk (into a towel or something) after the baby is done. Rest is essential. I've had mastitis 4 times, and healed without abx...but it does take some work! Make sure to rest and hydrate, massage and express, even with the abx. ChristusG
I had mastits once....when my oldest had just turned one. So about 8 years ago. We were on vacation, of all places. I believe it was the only time I felt like I was going to die! I feel your pain! Make sure that you nurse, nurse, nurse! And keep hydrated. I know that nursing is going to literally bring tears to your eyes, but it needs to be done. I got antibiotics on day 3 because I was just getting worse. I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this!
Um_2_4
I had it with oldest. Horrible...keep nursing, massaging and maybe someone here can remember: I put compresses on (I think I took warm wet washclothes... can't remember??anyone???). Also warm shower if you can and massage and express while in there. As far as the other kids...at those ages: computer or dvd time, can oldest pull some easy lunch together??? Janie Grace
Do you have a lump or is it just general soreness? If it's a clogged duct that's infected (a lump), hover over your baby and nurse with baby's nose pointed in direction of the clog. That is supposed to help clear it. Massage it (firmly) towards the nipple, use hot compresses. If there is no clog (and you suspect bacteria got in through the nipple), there is not much you can do but wait for abx to kick in. Advil. Keep kids busy however you can. My mastitis was usually the latter (bacteria in through cracked nipple) and I knew to just get abx ASAP. I'm not a quick-to-medicate girl, but mastitis is awful. I'm so sorry. If your dh isn't able to do your rx drop-off/delivery, get a friend to do it. You're not a wimp to need this NOW.

Janie Grace
. It's a crack. My baby is teething and bit me. Okay then forget all the massaging and baby-positioning. Keep nursing, drink lots, do whatever makes you feel better when you have the flu, and get those abx NOW. :grouphug:

Get someone to pick up your prescription, maybe someone could come care for your older kids and help you get comfortable and settled in bed with some fluids and something to eat. Perhaps some of the people your DH watches over would like to do a good turn and serve his family?
Whereneverever
Dh was able to run home at 2:30. My temp was up to 103f and I was shivering and crying in bed. He brought me abx, more ibuprofen, and water. He's watched the baby for the last 2.5 hours while I slept. My temp is still 102 for some reason, but I feel markedly better since I'm not shivering. Now I'm just hot.
Melissa in Australia
you need to be on antibiotics. Mastitis is an infection that is why you have a temperature. I had mastitis twice with my youngest, The first time I went to the dr. I was a crying mess. The Dr. wrote out a medical certificate for my DH to have the day off work to look after me and said I needed complete bed rest. The second time I went to the Dr. earlier and I recovered a lot faster.

Whereneverever
My fever seems to be lower this am, but my BooK is stil Really, really sore. How long should it take to feel better before I start worrying about an abscess?
lexi
Ouch! Put some dry rice in the bottom of a tube sock and tie it shut or sew it shut. Put the sock in the microwave. It's a great heating pad. Massage with it while you nurse.

How long should it take to feel better before I start worrying about an abscess? It would take about 48 hours for my soreness to subside. I don't think you need to worry about an abscess without a lump.
Whereneverever
My fever was gone all morning and is now back, although much lower. The painful spot seems to be smaller, as well.
