Miss Marple
I'm going through the process to get my son's student visa and we are finding the application process onerous and confusing :( He will be attending a school where he will also receive room and board for the entire 9 months (this is post high school). The amount is listed in the CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). However on the self-assessment form 6.8 it says "You must have L800 per month to cover maintenance in the UK". This is far above the cost of the school (tuition and room/board). Do I calculate L800 x 9 months = L7200? The amuont on the CAS is listed as L4500 (L = pounds sterling) The policy guide is no help on this point :(
Laura Corin
Are you including other aspects of life beyond room and board: clothes, books, travel (including air travel) beer, the odd movie or pizza? Here is one page giving estimates for one university. I don't know if that is what the form is getting at. I would also suggest contacting the school - they probably have experience dealing with this issue. L
Miss Marple
Thank you, Laura. That link was very helpful to see how they assess costs. I've also emailed the school but with the time difference I won't hear back before tomorrow. This is harder than applying for a passport :)
mumto2
Dh works with the UK Border Agency for a charity which brings student interns over. Just asked him. He must be able to show that he has access to the full amount(£7200). The £800 is the minimum so they know he will not be in paid employment. A bank statement in his name works well. The money must have been in the account for a certain number of days or they will not accept it. Let me know if you have any other questions and I will get Dh to help. I know the level of scrutiny has greatly increased recently.
Miss Marple
Thanks mumto2. I'm going to.pm you next week. Our home internet is out so I need to go to dh's office. I'm using my smartphone right now but it's too cumbersome for a longer post :)
