Stupid home warranty!

Recommended Posts

When we bought this house, the previous owners gifted us with a home warranty. We were very pleased as all of the appliances in the kitchen are at least 15 years old.

Well, a couple days ago my oven stopped working. We called and the repair guy came out this morning. I was SO ready for him to tell me to go shopping for a new stove!! Well, he FIXED my 18 year old stove!!! It cost the insurance company nearly $300!!! Have I mentioned my stove is18 years old??????

The real kicker is that there was a $95 copay. We thought that we'd be getting a new stove out of it, so it was worth it. When we found out we were paying $95 (at which point we didn't have a choice!) for this 18 year old stove, we were SO disappointed!!!!

This repair guy said he's never seen one of these home warranty companies pay for a new appliance. Ugh. Now I have to wait even longer for a new one - I want to get my $95 worth out of this one. It's 18 years old!!@!!!!!!

Wow, that's an old stove! My parents somehow manage to have appliances for 20+ yrs. Cars for 15 yrs.

I guess if it was me, I'd figure out beforehand how much we'd be willing to pay to repair vs. just buying a new item.

Hope you don't need any more repairs.

Well, that really stinks! I would have been madder than a wet hen! :banghead: Literally! So sorry Jennifer.

Thanks!!! So, what does a mad wet hen look like!? 'Cause I think I was there!!!

I'm sorry.

Do you want me to make you feel better? I don't even have an oven.

Wow! Do you not bake? That would be really hard for me!

LOL My parents get the same use out of appliances and cars. Me? Not usually!

Yea - We wouldn't have chosen to fix the stupid thing. We wouldn't have even called the repair guy on this 18 year old stove. But, because we have the warranty, we assumed that they'd come out and see how old it was and tell us it wasn't worth the cost to repair. Didn't happen. And, because he came out, we owed the $95 regardless of whether they fixed it or not. Stupid home warranty!!!

UGH! I know my parents have a home warranty. They buy one of the best plans each year and have gotten new appliances. I guess it depends on the company, but yes that would bite.

I'm guessing that the couple bought the super cheap plan for us. I probably would've done the same thing! But, yup, it does bite!

Our sellers offered a home warranty on our home, too. We were very disappointed with it, even though our copay was only $50. It was a rip-off scheme, and I will never again offer a home warranty unless a buyer requests it.

Yes - this is how we feel - ripped off. Even though we didn't pay for the warranty, we had to pay the copay. We just got our renewal notice in the mail yesterday. I'm looking forward to writing them a letter stating exactly WHY we aren't using their services again. I'm also going to mention this to the agent who sold this house (he's our neighbor).

Oh, bummer. We had one of those home warranties & got a new water heater out of it. I can't remember how much it cost *us,* but the surrounding area wasn't up to code, pipes had to be replaced, new holes drilled through brick, etc. It cost the warranty co over $1000.

So they *can* pay off. Hopefully yours will, too! Just think how many more appliances could break! :001_huh:

We were holding out for the heater, but no luck. ;)

No, I don't bake. Just try to imagine it.

I have considered making one of these though.

That would be very cool!!! My kids want to make one!!!

I'm glad to read a success story with one of these warranties! I'll pray that your heater breaks if you pray that my fridge, dishwasher, and oven go and that they'll pay for it!!! Deal???

They did fix the stove didn't they. Did it state it had to be replaced or just repaired? We never found hw's worth while. We cancelled our home warranty's after a month of purchasing our home. We kept it long enough to make sure everything was working. We just got the money back for it and put it in savings to go towards whatever repairs and/or replacements were needed. That being said my parents were offered one on their house in GA and it did pay for the replacement minus $150 co-pay of anew a/c unit.

Don't even get me started on our Home Warranty. It's funny how nothing is ever up to "code." I just can't even talk about, my blood is starting to boil.

Oh - I opened up a can of worms here!!! LOL So, if things aren't up to code, they aren't responsible? Ugh.

Yes, they did fix the stove. I should be grateful, I know. It's just that dh and I were led to believe that with this warranty, if things went wrong with these appliances, they would be replaced, as they were so old. I guess I'm just frustrated because I certainly wouldn't have put even the $95 copay into an 18 year old appliance! But, yes it is fixed and it will hopefully work for another few months.

I didn't know we could cancel the home warranty! Ours is up in a month, but that would be $40 back! I think I'll call and ask.

See - other people get things replaced with home warranties!! Why didn't we?? Ugh.

We got a new water heater -- an EXACT replacement of the behemoth (actually, we got 2 new water heaters because they dropped the first one and broke it, then had to order another, all of which took several days which were, of course, sans hot water) and a gas leak fixed.

And when the warranty was up they called and asked if we wanted to extend. Umm, no. "Really? Well, were you pleased with our service?"

In my sweetest voice, "Oh, we thought it was horrible. I'm so glad the warranty is over with so I never have to deal with you people again."

Because even though we got replacements, it was horrible to deal with. We had to replace with the EXACT same thing, or as close as possible. Shop for new, improved, energy-efficient? Sorry, no. Choice of installer? Nope.

For the record, my stove is 30 years old. I was glad it didn't go out while it was on the home warranty because I didn't want them involved AT ALL.
