We had 16dd to the breast center today. She has a 3cm (about 1 inch) diameter fibroadenoma. The doctor said for now we will just watch it and see. Another ultrasound in 6 months unless it bothers er or grows before then.

I had a "benign fibroadenoma variant" (according to the pathology report) removed several years ago. Mine was detected on a regular screening mammogram, and then a core needle biopsy was done. I got the exact same advice as your DD--just wait and watch and if it doesn't get any bigger and doesn't bother you then leave it alone. But mine did get bigger over a couple of years' time and so it was decided it would be best to get it out. It was about 6cm when removed. The surgery was no big deal, and it was a relief to have it gone. I *believe* fibroadenomas are the most common type of benign breast mass in young women. Although I was 44 when mine was removed, so not exactly young. I have an online acquaintance on another board who has been diagnosed with the same thing, and she also received the same just wait and watch advice.

I had a fibroadenoma benign tumor removed when I was 21 in college. I found a lump while taking a shower over spring break my senior year. Mine was large enough and very palpable so no ultrasound was performed (at least I *think* that was why no ultrasound, I'm 39 now). Surgeon performed a needle biopsy in his office. I was told we could wait and watch or get it out now. I had it removed a couple of days later. I didn't want to mess with the stress and *unknown* feeling of waiting to prolong the inevitable surgery. Surgery was outpatient. It left a huge scar on outside of my right breast. No big deal for me. Only took aspirin for recovery. I didn't miss any class or anything. HTH

I did eons ago (when I was 22 I think - now 46). The Dr. (one of the best in the area at the time) told me to stop having all caffeine, chocolate and peanuts for 6 months. It totally disappeared by my 6 month follow-up. Weird, but totally true.
