My vote would be Neil Gaiman.

I read rumors that he wasn't real happy with the cuts and changes made to Nightmare in Silver between his draft and what actually aired. If that's true, I'd bet that's the last Gaiman episode we get. Although, he'd have more creative license if in charge.

I don't understand why they didn't give him at least a two-part episode and let him take the time he needs to develop the story and characters. He said in his tweets following the broadcast that they made a lot of cuts.

No surprise to me. I like 11, but look forward to 12.

Yeah, I thought it was Breaking News when I told my 13yo about this, and she acted like it was old news. :glare:

I saw the Benedict Cumberbatch interview the other day in which he said he'd like to be the Doctor. I would watch that ....

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Matt Smith was my first Doctor. My Dh introduced me to it once the new season started and I've gone back and watched as many of the past episodes as Netflix will let me. I've never actually "seen" a regeneration for the first time along with everyone else. Plus, we're getting rid of our cable this week and will have to buy the Doctor Who episodes after they are released, so won't get to see them in real time.

Hopefully the next Doctor is a good one!

I was just thinking that! Probably because dh and dd just started watching Thor.

Anyway, I'd love to see what he'd do with the role. Actually, I'd like to watch him in pretty much anything.

I have Thor in my Netflix queue. Is it terrible I just want to watch to see what all the hubub is about Tom? Ds has no desire to watch it, sadly, I'll have to watch on my own.

No. Not terrible at all and you should absolutely watch it. Soon. The hubub is completely valid. Tom Hiddleston makes me very swoony. He's charming and funny in interviews, too.

Have you seen The Avengers yet? He really develops the character more in that. I may need to watch it later tonight, as a matter of fact. Except I still need to watch season 2 episode 3 of Sherlock, which I was planning to do later tonight. Sigh, my life is so hard.

At first I thought you guys were talking about the actor who played Thor and I was unimpressed, but then I realized you meant Loki, and he was the best part of the movie. He would be an amazing choice.

You know Christopher Eccleston is the bad guy in the second Thor movie coming out this year?

I really wish the news was that Moffat was leaving. I have liked some of his stories but I feel like he isn't taking the show in a great direction, the frenetic pace of the scripts and the fact that every other episode there is a world ending threat isn't good for the show. An episode like that here and there is fine, but it starts to feel pretty "cry wolf" when the universe is in danger several times a season. I think to some degree the pacing of the show reflects the pace of Moffat's personal life and that it kind of bleeds over into his shows, he is obviously overextended. As much as I love Neil Gaiman and I would love to have him have relatively free reign as a writer for an episode or two a year I don't think he would be great as a show runner for the simple fact that his plots tend to be very dark and while an occasional dark episode is fine Doctor Who needs the light heartedness mixed in there too.

I am ok with a new Doctor, I have liked them all so far, but I am nervous about casting every time, that said I will give whoever is cast a fair chance before deciding I don't like them, I was sure I would not like Matt Smith but I ended up really enjoying his run.

It seems like a terribly short time to cast the new doctor in time for the Christmas special. I am wondering if we will get to see the new face of the "real" new doctor this year at all or if there will be some oddness that leaves it up in the air until sometime next season.

I have thought for a long time that he was going to regenerate in the 50th anniversary episode. Then I thought I was wrong for a while because it looked like Matt Smith was confirming he would be on for season 8, I don't think a doctor has ever died in a Christmas episode though so that seems really odd too. Seems more likely that he dies in the 50th and then we meet the new doctor in the Christmas Episode, like with Tennant. Slightly spoiliery stuff below:

Matt Smith shaved his head to film a movie but they haven't filmed the Christmas special yet, I wonder how they are going to handle that, they filmed the 50th last month and he still had it then so at most he has 4 months to grow it back before the Christmas special is filmed. There is no way that is enough time to grow back that mop. My speculation is that either he will be badly wounded and somehow lose his hair in the anniversary episode. Maybe he ends up regenerating in to John Hurt and John Hurt plays the role for the first few episodes of the next series? I don't really see him being on the show long term though. I guess they may just sort of hand wave the haircut too though.

Yes, you can really tell this season that he was having a hard time going back and forth between Sherlock-brain and Who-brain. He was chopping 90-minute worthy episodes into 45-minute blocks, trying to infuse too much mystery into what is supposed to be sci-fi/fantasy, and relying too much on the Big Reset Button when the plot failed to end in a believable way. No wonder Matt Smith is tired, and it makes me very nervous to see how Sherlock fares in all this.

End of Time Part 1 was a Christmas special, wasn't it? And Part 2 aired as a New Year's Special? I guess that's close enough for a Christmas regeneration, but those were pretty dark episodes for holiday specials.

Recent finale spoilers (although if you're reading this thread, I'm assuming you're caught up):

I really wish they'd just held off on the Trenzalore plot and actually went through with the "fall of the Eleventh". As it is, the only build-up we're probably going to get is a bread crumb in the last five minutes of the 50th.

Ok...I didn't really like it. I think I just lost geek points. Lol. I did like the actor for Loki, though. He did a good job.

I have seen rumors that this will be the last season of Sherlock, so maybe if he does stay on with Doctor Who long term he will be able to focus on it more. I also think they should have saved the Trenzalore plot and had the doctor go out on that. As it is it feels like a fake out. I completely agree with it feeling like 90 minute episodes with too much mystery/master plot were being crammed in to 45 minutes.

and being a show runner, or even just a television writer on a regular basis is a very different skill set from being a novelist/short story writer. Gaiman is one of my favorite writers of all times, but I think if he possessed those skills they would have manifested by now. He could learn them, no doubt, but he's got a pretty sweet gig these days. He's working his butt off, no doubt, but he sets the pace and picks the tune. He doesn't seem the sort to want to give that up.

My guess is that Moffatt has the new Doctor shortlisted already. It's not like this is a big surprise. Moffatt lies to fans all the time. Fair enough, it's part of the job and it keeps us entertained. He made a big deal in his statement that somewhere out there someone's life is going to change and we don't know who it is etc. It just made me think that he knows perfectly well who it is.

mommymilkies! That's Tom Hiddleston!

And yes, I'm posting this AGAIN, despite posting it in the Celebrity Crushes thread, but I love it sooooo much!

I hope the doctor doesn't go even younger! No, no, no.

I think Eccleston was the perfect age. I have suuuuch a difficult time thinking of the doctor as 900 years old when he looks like he's barely of legal drinking age. (Matt Smith looks like a baby to me.).

Tennent was the absolute youngest the doctor should go. The doctor needs a few lines around the eyes and between the brows.

Oh, Loki is definitely the best part of the movie! (Although we were rather charmed by Darcy, too.) If he were't in it, I'd never watch it.

As much as I would be completely cool with a female doctor I really don't see it happening if Clara stays on, there is no way they are going to change up the format that much which is too bad, I am sure there are plenty of women out there who could put a great spin on the role. I have seen a few interesting names tossed around but I bet we end up with someone who is currently mostly unknown like the last three. It is hard to imagine that any of them were relatively unknown once now.

I just watched Thor. I was a bit distracted because we just watched the 2009 Star Trek movie, so I'm thinking of Thor as the father of Kirk. Then I kept thinking of Star Wars and wondered why Natalie Portman didn't get the funny headdress this time. But, Loki, yeah, worth watching.

I have this theory that every new geeky cult movie/TV show winds back up at the 2009 Star Trek movie. I sat up making a flow chart the other night (yeah, I'm bored or obsessed, I can't decide). I'm making an online version I'll share when done. Thor is going on the list too. I did gasp audibly at the Jeremy Renner cameo.

I love all things Gaiman, but I respectfully disagree.

I agree with Word Nerd, I prefer strong female companions, not quite Doctor Donna but more than Love Me Martha. Also agreeing with Kama, Moffat needs to choose a path. He's done some amazing things but he needs to pick one intensive show or the other. Just give us more Sherlock and pass on the Who torch.

ETA: I love all the doctors in their own way. Undoubtedly, I will say what I always say: "No, please don't leave me, I love you! I hate you, you're not *him*. Oh, that, that was clever! No, please don't leave me, I love you!"
