Farmgirl70
I'm looking for some ideas. I now have two college students (one just entering) and a 16 yo. One of the things we've missed is reading out loud together, so we hope to share a book over vacation. I'd like something of literary value, but also doesn't feel like "school" reading. That said, other years on vacation we've read and enjoyed "Franny and Zoey," "The Book Thief," "The Great Gatsby," "Huckleberry Finn," and many others. What have you enjoyed with your 16-20 year olds? Does anyone else still like to read together?
Kathie in VA
hmm, this is a good questions. My older ones are 18, 17, and 13 ... I haven't been doing read alouds but we always did enjoy them. Oh to do that again might be nice. I've always wanted to read the Screwtape Letters with them, we started once but got side tracked. You just inspired me to try again. Other ideas? Maybe Lord of Rings? Oh my 17 year old has just started reading the original Grimm's Fairy Tales.. something I started when they were young and I didn't know better lol... but we have been watching the TV show Grimm so he decided to pull out the book. guess I really don't have too many ideas off hand but at least I bumped your post! Farmgirl70
Thanks! We did read "Lord of the Rings" a while back. Fun read aloud if you haven't already!
Martha in GA
I don't know if you've already ready these for school, but books I've enjoyed reading aloud to my older kids include The Scarlet Pimpernel, A Tale of Two Cities (after we got started; it was a little confusing at first) and other books by Charles Dickens, books by Agatha Christie, The Mutiny on the Bounty (Nordoff and Hall), Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Bud, Not Buddy, All Quiet on the Western Front. Look into the Sonlight catalog for some other ideas.
Nscribe
The Count of Monte Cristo or Don Quixote. Both stimulate a lot of chatter.

MicheleinMN
The Chosen, The Count of Monte Cristo, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Lord of the Flies, The Tempest and many other works of Shakespeare. I think The Screwtape Letters would be great as a read aloud with older teens.
HollyDay
We are doing Screwtape Letters now. Gulliver's Travels and various Sherlock Holmes mysteries are also on the list
