Geography and civics curriculum for 4th grade

I'm looking to put together a year of geography and civics/government for my 4th grader. He is allergic to workbooks and reads at a very high level. I don't really want or need to buy something all laid out for me but I wouldn't mind some inspiration from others who have designed either of these programs.

We are definitely more of a "living books" family rather than a "memorize information" family (not that the two are mutually exclusive).

I have a couple of Holling C. Holling though I haven't looked through them much but his books are all in the U.S., right?

I also have dreams of putting together an elementary level introduction to the Constitution one day but I don't think this is the summer for that project.

Any ideas?

For geography content and map drawing (tied to history) you could try Mapping the World with Art. It is geared toward middle school, but I am using it with younger kids, just taking it slowly. I don't know anything that is good for teaching map skills except workbooks. My favorite ones so far are Evan-Moor Beginning Geography (k-2) and The Complete Book of Maps and Geography. As for civics, there have been several threads over the last year. You may like to search for them and read them. There were many ideas and sources listed. One easy book that is good for general civics is Oh, Say Can You See? (Keenan). HSLDA has a good article about teaching civics preschool-middle school: http://www.hslda.org/earlyyears/Civics.asp

I think we're going to do the BF Geography and Notgrass Uncle Sam and You this year for 5th grade. Not sure if that's what you're looking for, though.

I think you just cost me some money!

Uncle Sam and You looks like something that would work great for my DD. There are aspects of American History she won't be able to grasp, and I was planning on putting it off at least a year - but then wanted something. I think this slips in there perfectly! Being topical it should work for her....

Thanks!!! ('er, I think that is thanks....)

Oh, my goodness. I didn't even think of asking if anyone knew of a geography book I could hand to my map- and history-loving highly artistic, workbook-phobic, and not very motivated 4th grader to teach geography to himself so I don't have to . . .but I think Mapping the World with Art is exactly that. Thanks so much!

My dd6 loves the Evan-Moor Geography books and will probably do one every year but, again, not a good fit for my ds at all.

Hahaha Glad I can help... ;)

FWIW, If you have a Mardel's near you, they might have Uncle Sam and You that you could get at their 20% off sale this summer. Maybe that might help a bit?

I didn't even know what Mardel's was - but I checked anyway. Nope, any savings would be used up in fuel getting there! Thanks though!
