creekmom
My dd will be in 7th grade next year, and she's used Saxon algebra 1/2 this year. I will put her in a more rigorous algebra course as an 8th grader, but I plan on using MUS algebra 1 next year. I think she would love the format of LOF, but I'm not sure which book to use to supplement algebra. Any suggestions? Thanks!
NittanyJen
Beginning Algebra with the Home Companion book? That is the Algebra I course.
creekmom
I was thinking about using this, but according to his website, the word problems are difficult if you haven't had his pre algebra courses. Do you have any experience with this book?
kiwi mum
I will put her in a more rigorous algebra course as an 8th grader, but I plan on using MUS algebra 1 next year. You could use LOF Beginning Algebra after MUS. It would definitely be a step up. You could use the LOF prealgebra books in 7th to get her used to the style etc without the content being overwhelming. I haven't personally used the prealgebra books yet, although I do have them. I have used from Apples to Decimals and percents and from Beginning Algebra to Trigonometry. NittanyJen
DS12 has used LOF from Fractions onward through the end of Beginning Algebra. I have not used MUS. Fred at all levels requires you to apply your knowledge; it is not a traditional cut and paste algebra book where you simply copy the example and repeat it over and over with different numbers. However, he does provide you with what you need to know first. If you're concerned about the difficulty level, order the PreA with Biology book first and take a look at it-- they have a full refund policy if you order from ZTwist, no questions asked. The PreA with Economics is the second half of that course, though I will warn that it is an, *ahem* extremely opinionated book on the economics front <grin>. Good stuff for discussion :). The Bio and Economics books can be covered in a few months to half a year (total, not each), depending upon your pacing. I would order the Bio book and the Beginning algebra book and gauge for yourself, with the return policy to back you up. Jen
lauracolumbus
I've always used LOF as a review rather than an intro, so I would use the pre-Algebra books. Also, I've typically used them over the summer to keep math fresh, yet fun for my kids. You could easily work through the biology book over the summer even with an easy pacing.
