The reason I ask is because I have been guided by WTM for a couple of years now but just recently started to participate in the forums. The reason for this? When I first read the book and then checked out the web site, the forums were very confusing to me. I could not find my way around and couldn't find answers to my questions in a timely manner. But it was because of the old template for the forums. When I came back again to ask some questions and saw the new format-WOW! What a change, much better! So I started to wonder how many others were like me?

I used to lurk from time to time on the old forums and post once in a blue moon. Then I'd take a break for a few months before coming back to lurk again. That went on for probably five years or so. But I didn't really start posting until the new forum, and I've posted more in two months than I did in the previous five years.

I mostly lurked for 7-8 years. I did buy/sell and ask a question once in a while. I've been most active in the last week or so trying to get my posts up to sell stuff. I'm just not a message board poster, though I'm not sure why.

I read WTM in 2000 and started hs in 2003. Joined forum Jan 2008 and started actively posting June 2008. Honestly, I didn't have time before the move, now with no life I have all the time in the world. :tongue_smilie:

But that brings me to another question and Jodie if this is hijacking please let me know and forgive me. How do people keep up the all the threads or more specifically the really long ones. They are too much for me with no life. I could not imagine trying to keep up them with a life.

Yeah me too! I'm a Popper(listen to me, I've only been a member since July 2008:lol:), I pop in to the forums several times a day if I'm home. I pick the posts that interest me and if they are really long I just read the OP and then comment if I want to. Who has the time to read all of them?;)

Does popper mean to just read the op and post w/o reading any other comments?

Oh I don't know if it has an assigned designation here or not. I just used it because it described my relationship with this forum. I do read most comments by the way. If it's over 2 pages I start to skim and if it's over 4 I just read the first page and the post my own. Except for "what has your 3 year old said a little too loud out in public", because that one is just too funny.

Same thing here. I tried to read the old forums -- and even got some good answers there. But I never really understood how they worked and the change-over always confused me. If I was silly enough to post a question just before the change, it just sat there and I felt dumb asking the same question again. I also don't like asking questions that have already been answered. But trying to search the old forums was fruitless. And finally, there was some kind of problem with the links -- if I refreshed the page to see new posts, all the visited links were unmarked, so I ended up reading some of the posts over and over.

Yeah -- I gave up! LOL! I stopped in back in January for some reason, found the new format and -- blah blah blah.

I first read WTM a LONG time ago it seems like. I didn't know there were WTM Forums here until I was looking for something and it sent me here. It looked interesting. That was the beginning of April, and I joined then. So it was years....I'm thinking 5ish years.....between the time I read WTM to the time I found the boards and joined about 4 months ago!

when I read it the first time. I came to the boards while I was reading through it.

The board moved *a lot* slower back then, and SWB was a pretty regular poster. I was a lurker for years, and only posted a little before the board format change (as jubilee academy). I post more now, but not a whole lot! :)

I don't know how to vote. I found WTM when I found out I was pg w/ #1 & began to basically...memorize it, lol.

But technically, ds wasn't old enough for me to *actually* use it (though I did try at times) until about 3 yrs ago. I was introduced to the forums a yr & a half ago.

Although...I did glance over the forums about 5 yrs ago. The old format initially was too overhwelming, & I was too intimidated to post, since my dc were so little. So I lurked for a week or so & that was it.

I have Jami to thank for my current addiction. :001_huh:

I started posting a few months after reading the book -- it took me awhile to figure out that people would really. speak. their. mind. Truthfully, it took me by surprise and the out-and-out cat fights just about scared me away for good.

By and by, I saw glimmers of greatness here and came to realize that I really liked these Boardie Buddies even if their approach, opinion, tact or style of conversation didn't match mine.

WTM's boardies are smart, opinionated, well-versed, will hold up the down-trodden, beat-down the smart-*sses and hold you accountable to what you really think.

I especially love the WTM board during weeks of non-stop rain!

:iagree: All of our conversation skills differ greatly and there have been a few comments that I thought to myself "Well that could have been expressed a little more tactfully". You can get your opinion across without hurting feelings or being rude. But then again sometimes it doesn't always come across the way we mean it too. I hope I have not unintentionally offended someone.

I voted 2 years. I have read through the book at least 3 times over the past 2 years and it wasn't until this past April that I realized there was a website! I found the forums through the website, lurked for about a week and then joined.

I'm getting more comfortable posting.:)

I lurked on the old boards for a couple of years, but didn't participate much because of my dislike of the format. I started participating after the switch to vBulletin.

I do own the book, and have read the section on grammar stage a few times, but I don't really follow it much. It just isn't a realistic plan with my severely LD son. I'm always just amazed at how rigorous and long many of your school days are! Makes me feel like a real slacker!

We are using SOTW and enjoying it, so maybe I'm moving closer! And I'm contemplating getting WWE to use as a supplement. So there might be hope for me yet!

But I do love the forums, and have been here for several years.

I voted that I'd read it before starting on the forums. But I read it a year or so before my oldest child was conceived! And then started on the forums when he was about 18 months, I think. I didn't post regularly until we were actually doing more pre-K work.

Still haven't read WTM. Don't plan to. Found my way here a few months back by way of LCC.

I wish I had thought to add to the poll: BOOK? Who wants to read the book? I'm fine without it.

Oh well, hindsight is 20/20, right?

I checked out the LCC website and their forums...no wonder you hang out here! The last post there was over 3 weeks ago! :001_huh: It would take forever to get questions answered.

If you're interested, there's a MUCH more active yahoo group for LCC.

I'm like you! I had and was using the books for 3 years before joining the forum. And, it was for the same reason you stated. The old forum seemed very confusing to me and I really wasn't ready to try and figure it all out. I have participated in the WTM yahoo group for a year of over, I can't remember. When I heard through the yahoo group that the forums were being changed, I came on to take a look. I felt it was a change for the better and I could easily navigate through it. :)

:iagree: Yes, if you are interested in LCC {I was introduced to it through this forum} I would suggest becoming a member of the yahoo group. I get it mailed to me by the digest option and I get 1 or 2 digests a day. Everyone is really friendly and does there best to answer your questions! :)

You do realize there *might* be people here (esp. on this board) who don't follow the WTM methods and maybe haven't even heard of or read the book, right?? I'm just sayin', lol. I couldn't vote, but love the boards! :001_smile:

I actually *have* read the book, but we're more delight-directed almost unschooling in our homeschooling approach. It's funny because I almost started a poll today about "How many people here DON'T follow WTM principles?" but didn't know it that was appropriate.

Hope it's okay to hang out with y'all!

I started coming to the boards at the same time I read the book (over 7 years ago). The funny thing is, I was much more active in responding to posts and asking questions in the old format. I'm surprised at how few posts I have with this format. I'm on the boards on and off all day, I just don't respond. I don't know, I guess I think it takes longer with this format and I never want to just add a quick thought because I find it annoying to open a thread I've been following just for an "I agree" (no offence meant). With the old style I could add a one line thought easily. I also hardly ever start a new topic here (In fact I don't know if I ever have). It's just easier for me to search and find something close to what I want and get the answers immediately! I like these boards but I was more "social" on the old ones. No matter what, I gain strength and wisdom daily from coming here!

Like I said I'm new here and I didn't know that at first, but do now:D. I just assumed that the people on The Well Trained Mind Forums used The Well Trained Mind in their methods of teaching. I think that is a reasonable assumption for a lot of people who come here to check out the forums. I don't care who's on here. Everyone is welcome as far as I'm concerned.

Howzabout a poll option for "found the boards, started integrating a few WTM stuff from reading the responses on the boards, then went out and got TWTM...."?? per my sig, i still don't follow a Classical [or LCC] style. and I probably never will. But i do like a lot of the rigor that is upheld here. iron sharpens iron. and yes, a poll for "if you don't follow WTM, what benefit do you get from these forums? Do you use any of SWB's suggestions?" --something like that would be appropriate, i think.

but i didn't vote ;)

I fell in love w/ SOTW and the AG when Sabrina presented it at a homeschool group meeting [hi Sabrina!!] yeeeeears ago. [so y'all can blame her for me being here, lol] It was the openness of the replies in the old forum that started getting the info slammed into my brain --seeing the Q and replies all at once made for a FAST learning experience and made that learning curve a LOT easier. W/ this format i rarely go to the Curriculum board anymore. It really is annoying to open each post when it was faster to skim all the replies at once. As someone else posted, we simply don't have TIME to open each post. But since I was already sucked into the community i determined to make it work :D There have already been a few threads about the pros and cons of both formats, so i'll stop there, lol.

Jodie --I'm a popper too! and one of my favorite quotes is "thou shalt not take offense where none was intended."

huh. can't find a reference...musta been in the Texas translation.... :D

I bought the book when it first came out ('99?), but I didn't get the internet until...let's see. '04? '05? I think maybe it was '04.

As soon as I did, I made a beeline for the WTM boards!

The first post I ever read on here was Peek a boo saying, "Shhh, do you hear that? I can hear the ceiling fans whirring." Everyone was enjoying the silence of their kids being at VBS. I think that was the first, anyway.

I agree and no offense taken on my part.:001_smile: I like that there are all kinds of schoolers on here. You can learn more about all kinds homeschooling in one day on this forum than any other I've ever been on. Now that's pretty awesome!
