A home for their hearts
My dd13 wants to study ancient Greek history. I would like to try to turn this into a full year curriculum for her next year. It would be great if there was already something put together for me to buy but I don't think there is. So, if you were study ancient greece what books and resources would you include? thanks! Holly
We'll be using SCM's Joshua Through Malachi and Ancient Greece. They are updating it and it won't be out until this summer though. It does have quite a bit of Bible history, but their booklist might be helpful to you either way. This is their updated list of books: http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/scmguide/history-modules-overview/history-module-2/curriculum-plan-joshua-through-malachi-ancient-greece/
A home for their hearts
I used CTT Greece which is supposed to be a semester long but you could easily add things to it. The other book I looked at was MP Dorothy Mills Book of Ancient Greeks. You could add in Famous Men of Greece. I had Ds12 read The Trojan War and The Aeneid only because he was so familiar with The Odyssey. I would definitely add in a Greek Mythology class. For lighter work, you could use the NME packets to study for. I have more but I'll have to post it tomorrow. Thanks for these suggestions. What is CTT, and NME? HTH I've never seen the kolbe curriculum. I'm having a hard time navigating their website. The link to their store isn't working. Could you tell me how much there courses cost? Did you use the online course or did you just buy the lesson plans? Do you remember how much they cost? thanks so much!
regentrude
This is what my DD used for Ancient Greece ad Rome when she was 13: Textbook: A Short History of Western Civilizations by John Harrison and Richard Sullivan, Ch. 3-13 (any other text as spine would work) Supplementary reading: A Day in Old Athens William S. MicheleinMN
The Kolbe lesson plans run about $50 per subject, so around $100 if you use both the literature and history ones. They also now have a no resale policy. That cost is just the lesson plans; you will still have to buy or get the books from somewhere. (I used Amazon and library sales.) I could not get their link for the store to work either. Hopefully, they will get it fixed soon. http://www.kolbe.org/index.php/academics/sample-course-plans/ - Preview of lesson plans http://www.kolbe.org/documents/ninth/Literature9Sample.pdf & http://www.kolbe.org/documents/ninth/History9Sample.pdf (I also think the Memoria Press Ancient Greece stuff looks good.) Did your dd do okay with the teaching company courses? Are they college level? I don't want to spend money on something that might be above my dd's head. I wish they had samples on their site! Kfamily
My high school dd is about to start studying Ancient Greece and will be using The Book of the Ancient Greeks by Dorothy Mills along with a number of other resources and books. Since she is in high school, we've created a humanites style approach by adding philosophy and art history to this study as well. I have a rough schedule for this on my blog and can post it here, if you'd like. Also, I'm creating Book Notes for The Book of the Ancient Greeks but with two optional levels. The notes can be used for middle school ages but I've included a high school addition. If you'd like to have these you can print whatever you'd like. These are at A Mind in the Light under Book Notes.

I'll go look again. Thanks! If you go to the page titled Book Notes and scroll all the way down towards the bottom of the page, you should see The Book of the Ancient Greeks book cover. I have the first twelve weeks ready as of now. I will be working hard on this since my older dd will be using these notes. I should have the entire book completed by the end of the summer. At this time, I would then combine everything into one complete guide.

Also, is there a list someone with all the books used in the schedule? I was also wondering if they are all in the public domain or if some need to be purchased? Kfamily
The booklist, along with the schedule, is here under Year Nine: http://amindinthelight.blogspot.com/p/year-nine.html (The booklist, as of now, just includes the work for the humanities and is not a schedule for all of Year Nine...I haven't finished all of this yet.) Some of the books I have linked with an online option and some probably do have an online option but I've not linked then yet. I can do this today, if you would find it helpful. The rest would have to be purchased but I could put these together here or in a private message and link them to Amazon, if you'd like. I do hope, in the near future to move everything from a blog to a website, but since we are still in a temporary state here (just got back from Okinawa, Japan) I'm going set this up when we are settled. Here is the page with Book Notes: http://amindinthelight.blogspot.com/p/book-notes.html Scroll all the way towards the bottom to find the book title (Book of the Ancient Greeks) and you will find the notes listed by chapter. (I can't share the link as one download until I combine all of it into one large download. I have finished the entire book, but still need to type and upload the remaining 6 chapters. After this, I can take it all down as separate downloads and put it into one download.) The selections from Plutarch are linked (from an online source) under the week of which it is to be read. I can move this to Year Nine and make this easier to find until I have it all completed. I hope this helps. I will be adding to the notes for History of Art for Young People and The Discoverers very soon as well.
sagira
Check out this free ebook on Ancient Greece. It focuses on the geography of Greece, but also provides history and culture. I downloaded to use next year with our Ancient Greece studies. My main spine for Ancient Greece is going to be Dorothy Mills' Book of The Ancient Greeks. I'm also using K12 HO to cover the rest of the world. I'm focusing on Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome. Here's the free Ancient Greece portion: http://www.knowledgequestmaps.com/Ancient-Greece.html
